Starter on Sale

It is usually the solenoid. Toyota’s have been doing that for decades, unfortunately.

Thats why I just put a new solenoid on mine. If this sale had been around when I did the work I would have done the whole thing.

And for those that don’t know.. it is possible to get the truck started if the solenoid fails, but it requires two people, jumper cables, and a very long Phillips screwdriver and electrical tape. Most people can scrounge up everything besides that screwdriver if necessary. Just makes me think I should throw one in the tool bag for LCDC.

How-to would be great!

Just did some digging and realize I need a longer screwdriver anyway. Seems the idea came from tundra forums so maybe there's more in the way of how-tos out there on different sites.

More info from someone that's actually done it in this thread, see posts 15, 21, 37: Replacing the starter on the trail.

Damn starter failed on my rig tonght. Sure wish I had one on hand but this thread is a timely coincidence. Thanks for the part numbers gentlemen but I think I'll have my local Indy shop, Tandem Off-road, do the work. I'm still recovering from a radiator install in my wife's GX460 last weekend. You know, wrenching for fun is much better than wrenching for necessity...... or maybe I'm just getting old

your post was the motivation i needed. I just ordered one. I don't want to wait til the starter fails on mine, then have to wait to order one or be stuck paying local dealer prices. Best deal i found with shipping was Genuine OEM Toyota Parts & Accessories | Larry H. Miller Toyota Parts with coupon code "TAKE10". They already had no tax, the cheapest shipping, and that coupon knocked another $10 off. Grand total $171.78, not bad

Good luck with your replacement. BTW, after all my research this morning, starter job book time is quoted at 5hrs. Local dealer price (I’m in Arlington, TX) was $300. I’m currently in nervous wait mode, trying not to start drinking for lunch. :(

$300 labor isn't bad at all, I'd have expected double that

I should have been more clear, $300 is retail on the starter. Labor has been quoted at $675 :( but when you NEED a starter and decide you don’t want to do it on the ground in your driveway, they kinda got ya by the balls

Good luck. The list price on the part (starter) is $522.64. Seems like they are giving you a discount. Did they charge you for the exhaust manifold gaskets? i wonder which method they will use to replace your starter.

Not sure yet on the method. I won’t be surprised if the gasket is an “add on” among other things. I should have known better but my Indy shop was booked for months so I’m at a local dealer. This could go real bad real quick but I’m trying to be optimistic since I decided not to do the work myself and see what happens. They “should” be able to handle it but can they do it without pissing me off or screwing anything up—-well that remains to be seen:bang:

I am sure a master tech is working on it. He will access repair manual.

Fyi, also costco members save 15 % on repairs. Perhaps, this dealer is part of the costco auto program.

Good point. They could use the remanfacutred denso model.
The one thing I didn’t do is put my hands on the part:bang: I gave them the OEM number but you never know. Guess what I’m going to check now? Thanks gentlemen

just verified, it is a new starter 28100-0S050. Still pricey at $300 but wtf, gotta get it done

Good job Checking. $300 ain’t bad at all for having available when you needed it

$1k later and it’s done.....only to find out that I’ve got the beginnings of the dreaded valley coolant leak in addition to my currently janky radiator. Luckily the dealer didn’t screw anything up. Thanks for helping me through it today guys

I received my new starter. It looks new.

tripledave,

Can you please post your invoice? i would like to see number of hours they billed and parts. I am curious to see which method was used to change your starter.

I had my dealer quote me labor on the starter install yesterday and he said 2 hours. I was very shocked but in a good way. I have the parts already so they will install those. Probably get it scheduled to be done in 2 weeks. Won’t be surprised if they come back and say it will be more than 2 hours. I have 230,000 miles on the starter with no issues, but might as well get it replaced before it is too late.
