Starter cranking continuously without the key in the ignition

I have a 92 LC 3fe that went to a shop for a no-start issue, and after the shop gave up, I towed it back, and now I have an issue where the starter cranks without a key as soon as the negative terminal is connected to the battery. I have replaced the starter with my backup, even though I firmly believe the solenoid is good on each of them. I have also replaced the ignition switch (not the key barrel), but this problem continues. I'm looking for suggestions as to where to start. I've searched Mud and asked Mr. Google, but I keep getting generic AI responses such as "check the starter relay," which the 3fe does not have. I wonder if any of you have had a similar issue and were able to root out the cause. Thanks

First thing to do is disconnect the control wire to the solenoid leaving only the large cable that connects battery to starter.
If the starter continues to run as before, then you know the contacts in the solenoid are welded closed.
Next step is to run a wire from battery to solenoid. Does the starter stop and start when connecting the wire momentarily.
If the starter stops and starts then you need to diagnose other areas of the starting circuit but the starter itself appears OK.
If not replace the starter or solenoid plunger and contacts.

Thanks, PPC. I disconnected the small wire to the starter, and the starter continues to crank when power is applied. Sounds like it's time for a replacement or rebuild. Thanks for the input.

The only way the starter would continue to crank is if the solenoid contacts were welded together.
Great way to burn it to the ground.

FWIW, I've had poor results from the OEM reman starters.
Wound up having to replace contacts and plungers on 2 units that came in red and white boxes.
