Leaving the gym I saw my SRS light was on (the one in the cluster) and the passenger seatbelt light kept blinking. Turned off the 200, turned back on, no lights, drove for a bit and they came back on. Nothing is on the seat that should trigger the occupant sensor. I latched the seatbelt without an occupant and the light stayed out. Tried again with the seatbelt unbuckled and the light came back.

So it's one of three things; seatbelt buckle sensor ($30), occupant sensor ($?) or a sensor in the "Belt/Retractor" assembly ($320). Needless to say I'm hoping something gummed up the buckle sensor. I'm going to blast it with electric cleaner tomorrow. I lent my Techsteam cable out so I can't pull codes just yet.

What are the thoughts of the B&B?

I'm having the same issue occasionally. Based on the codes I've pulled it appears to be the passenger side belt/retractor. I know someone else on here had to replace theirs as well.

I also know the retractor still works when the system isn't disabling it for failing it's self test.

I hope this helps. My post from 9/16/16-
I had the same problem on a 2013 LX in April. 3 times during a drive home from San Francisco the SRS (airbag) warning light came on and the Airbag Off indicator light came on. The warning light didn’t come on at the dealership but they did see codes for the right front seatbelt tensioner sensor so they replaced the right front seatbelt assembly. It's under warranty so no cost to me.

Aye. Not a cheap part. I've thought a few times about pulling it apart and seeing if it just needs some cleaning but haven't gotten around to it.

For anyone curious, I just ordered these parts. The dealer gave me a printout of the TIS diagnostic instructions but it turns out I hate any sort of OEM wiring diagnostic work so I'm going to break my rule and just throw new parts at it and hope for the best. Pretty sure I only need the belt/retractor but I added in the buckle just in case that's the sensor.

Here's what nearly $400 in seatbelt equipment looks like. Apparently the belt has HAZMAT so that was a fun surprise to have to pay extra shipping on. I could have at least gotten a toyota sticker or something.

Any idea what the HAZMAT is? Rechargeable Lithium battery maybe?

TIA

I have a guess but nothing concrete. Newer belt assemblies have an SRS tie-in that locks the belt incase of a rollover or hard impact. It's sort of an instantaneous explosive like an airbag. I know these belts also have the electrical locking as I've hit the brakes hard to avoid asshat drivers and the servos locked up in the belt holding it tight, then a few seconds later you could hear the servos release the belt tension. So I'm assuming there are two types of emergency locking, "explosive" and electro-mechanical. It does have a provision that looks like an airbag plug if you've ever seen those. Pure speculation though.

It's definitely a complicated and well engineer device.

The belt assembly fixed it.

Fun fact, removing your rear seats will also set off the srs light. I was stumped for a solid hour as to why I was still getting the light but with different codes in techstream this time. Yup. I'm dumb. About to bolt the 2nd row back in.

You can install resistors that fool the system into thinking the 2nd row seats/airbags are still there...and you'll stop getting the light.

I've got the stuff to do this, but since I have yet to remove my 2nd row, I haven't used them yet. Cheap stuff. Maybe $20.

Shouldn't that be repaired under warranty free of charge? Per Toyota web site
"Restraint Systems Warranty

This warranty covers repairs needed to correct defects in materials or workmanship of any seatbelt or air bag system supplied by Toyota, subject to the exceptions indicated under “What Is Not Covered” on pages 14-15.

Coverage is for 60 months or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

For vehicles sold and registered in the state of Kansas, the warranty for seatbelts and related components is 10 years, regardless of mileage. "

10mm socket
14mm socket

That's it.

Pop off the door sills
Pop off the lower black panel
One 10mm at the bottom of the top trim
Two 10mm holding the grab handle
Pop off the upper panel.

14mm holding the top assembly

10mm at the top and 14mm at the bottom holding the bottom main assembly.

Pull the black portion of the yellow plug first then pull the plug out. Three other electrical connections. And its out.

Do the reverse to get it back together.

The hardest part is paying $350 for a damn seatbelt.

Great thread. I'm having a similar but slightly different issue. Rather than the SRS and passenger seatbelt light blinking when there is no one sitting in the passenger seat, I'm getting those lights OCCASIONALLY when there IS an occupant and the seatbelt is buckled. This is obviously worrisome because the warning lights seem to indicate that the airbag is off and the seatbelt is not buckled even when someone is sitting there with a seatbelt on. The concern is that in an accident the tensioner might not do its job and the airbag won't deploy. Of course, this didn't show up when I was at the dealership the other day and I'm not quite the handiest person to pull codes and diagnose an issue like this. Any recommendations? Also, if the vehicle is currently not showing this problem but does so occasionally would the error codes still be stored from previous occurrences? Thanks!

It'll show in the "History" as a DTC in Techstream. I'm guessing the tech only looked for codes under "Current" as most every vehicle has a gang of random DTCs in it's history.

Mine started out as intermittent then was stuck permanently. The passenger side air bag showing off while there's an occupant might be an indication. Or the occupancy classification ECU might need calibration.

If I had to guess it would be the same issue as mine but like you said, pretty hard to nail down unless it's throwing the code. And spending $315 plus HAZMAT shipping on a "maybe" isn't really fun. The s***ty part is it's only one small sensor at the bottom of the belt assembly but you need to buy the whole thing.

Thanks.
