So, I thought I might have bad gas (Well of course I do :D) but the truck was stuttering on the way to work yesterday. I filled up with new gas last night and it's still not running right.

This morning, while warming up it was back firing and sputtering like crazy. After she warmed up it wasn't AS bad but still stuttering occasionally. While driving to the job it starting hesitating again.

Within the last year or two I've replaced wires, cap, rotor, o2 sensor (behind cat), main fuel filter.

I'm not sure where to start and thought I'd check in with my ih8mud buds.

Howdy! I wnet thru that on my 85 for a whle. Finally I found that the Throttle Position Sensor socket was loose and not making good constant contact. I've heard of others having the same problem if it is full of water or mud. It is the connector next to the intake opening on the front of the air box. John

run the engine diagnostic on it and see if any codes are comin up. it could easily be the mass air flow, and tps. even the 02 sensor tho you replaced it recently, but the diagnostics should tell you the truth about it. also check your engine grounds they can do wacky stuff some times. one on the firewall leading to the rear hook point, two running to the bottom left bolt on the intake plenum and one goin from the battery to the block.

Good luck.

I jumped the terminals, no codes came up.

I double checked the timing, looks good. Would the cold-start injector cause it to run like crap even after the engine gets warm?

If it was one of my O2 sensors, wouldn't I get a CEL?

Any other ideas, I'm kinda stumped here. :(

Usually a bad cat just restricts exhaust flow. I had a piece break out of my cat and plug up my muffler. The truck didn't back-fire or sputter, it just didn't have any power.

You say Ox sensor behind the cat. Do you really have two? The Ox sensor in front of the cat is more important if that is the case.

Yea, I really have two lol. There is one in front of the Cat and one behind it. Maybe it's a California truck?

Check your fuel pressure.

Usually a failing fuel pump will cause hesitation, or an occasional stumble. It gently runs out of power, then comes back. It won't cause back-firing or sputtering.

Another possible spot on the 22re is the wire harness to the injectors. They are hooked up in pairs and connected with a small crimp. Sometimes it comes loose. It's pretty easy to peal back the tape to find and fix.

Thanks Pappy, I'll check out the wiring harness for the injectors.

Do I have to take anything off to get to the wiring harness? I'm at work and can't look at it right now..

but if its a wire harness problem theres a real good chance more problems exist wich will lead to a lot of codes.

guys remember, these trucks really hate having bad grounds. so take off the battery terminals clean the lugs, ( with the proper tool) make damn dure the wire to the BLOCK and to the INNER FENDER are nice an clean.
PLUS make sure that ground lug thats bolted to the plenum is intact

backfiring exhaust is due to retarded timing. so jump yer te1 end e1 get it set back to 8 or 5 and go from there.

you have two cats its a california truck.

if they are stock cats and you dont live in california, take one off and scrap it,. its worth about 80 bucks

EGR valve, check to make sure it is working properly! the procedure is in the FSM. Also the FSM has a good troubleshooting guide. but since there are no codes, check the EGR, system, if it is clogged, it can cause these problems.
