Here's the one on my Aus spec 40 ;)

The speed sensor sends a forward motion signal to the "computer" which when senses above a certain speed and opens a VSV to allow the fuel vapours, from the charcoal canister to feed into inlet manifold and be burnt in the combustion cycle.

Emission systems vary but that is the basic principal.

On my AUS '84 the sensor is a magnetic pick-up on the speedo gauge needle.

You can do a thread search for speed marker relay. I think coolerman had some pics up of a cleaned up one, so you don't need to worry about adding bandwidth for yours.;)

Well there you go.. None of my 10 40s have a VSS, but none are '84 either..

Maybe in AU.

But every 75 or later 40 gauge cluster I have seen has that one in the back. From what I can tell they are eith a 4 or 6 pulse.

Is your rig stock? Motor I mean. It looks just like a dirty version of the vss I installed in my rig after I put a vortec in it. It is supposed to supply the motor ECM with the signals it no longer gets from the auto transmission. It is supposed to keep the air/fuel mixture correct for the load on the motor. Check out BTB Products for more info.

This is a stock 1f motor..6/1969 build..I see SOR lists a "speed marker" similar to this for the 3/69-1971...The funny thing is, there are no emissions that I am aware of for this year-so what would the purpose be??And what would change if i bypassed it?

emissions stuff starts in 1967. By 1969 the Cruiser is using the 2bbl and federal emissions system from the Crown sedan. The speed marker is used to trigger the coasting air valve on the side of the carb.

Remove the speed marker, emissions control brain (inside the truck), vacuum switching valve(underhood) and the air valve (electric widget on carb. Cap the vacuum ports where the air valve was connected. Done.

1977 FJ55...

I broke my speedo cable a month or two ago, then went searching for the fabled speed marker and the computer and the cable pieces I would need to fix it. Nothing...

My old speedometer cable is one piece, it goes from the transfer case directly to the speedo/odometer gauge. Looks to be original, or at least OEM. No sign of any speed marker. I still don't know where this "computer" is...

California spec vehicle.

Secondary question:

How much of this stuff is actually necessary to pass CA emissions?

Answer to Part 1: speedmarker second generation went from 1/75-8/76. That is why you do not see it on your 77
