OK I drive an FJ40 but my Daughter's 89 Runner needs a new spare tire holder. The old lifter thing fell apart. I was thinking of welding a big bolt were the lifter goes and using a huge wing nut and washer or coming off the roll bar and mounting it inside. Any ideas? The Runner is stock but pretty beat up.

A friend mounted a cable pulley down where the lifter goes. He then ran the cable to a winch he buried into the fender area. It has a set of holes on the winch drum and base so it can be locked with a pin or padlock.

Thanks all, I looked and did find them cheap on Ebay. I will get under there agian and see if it unbolts or is rusted in place.

on my 80 it unbolted with the bolts going in from above it. i had the bed off, so it was a cinch.

if your truck is the same it will probably be best to use a gear wrench to remove the bolts.

I won't be able to get under it now until next week, daughter is out of town. Looked like a plate came off the housing and a horseshoe shaped spring fell out. The plate looked badly bent but the whole thing was so rusty I probably will see about getting one off E-gay or at the pick&pull.
