No, not that spam, the REAL Spam. Just for fun, I introduced my kids to Spam last night with mac and cheese for dinner. I have fond memories of it camping with my folks. I was sad to see upon opening that they've done away with the layer of gelatinous goo covering the "meat". That was one of the gross highlights of seeing my Mom slice it up. Anyway, fried it up and served. Holy crap is it saltier than I remember. Kids thought it tasted okay, but odd. Doubt they'll ask for it again.

I usually purchase a can a month or so to keep it in the pantry for when I need a fix. The last one, not that long ago, still had some of the gelatinous goo but not as much as it used to. I agree on the salty, I think our tastes have changed. But i still can't get myself to buy anything but the original. Growing up in Alaska in the late 50's early '60's we ate a lot of Spam and K-rations and C-rations that were always around Army bases back then. I thought lettuce was brown and that milk came in a box you added water to. Still have fond memories of my dad frying up some spam and eggs on weekend mornings. Wife and kids have always left my spam alone, I know if I put it there it will be there when I need a fix. Heck, I might just cut some strips to put in my ABT's instead of the little smoky and see how that works. Now I need a fix.......:smokin:

When I lived in Hawaii they loved the stuff, usually a meat option on any "mixed plate" you order.

And then there's this:

They do love it in Hawaii. My wife's uncle lives there and sends us a couple cans every year... I'm pretty sure they are multiplying in my pantry.

When I was a kid, I think half our diet on the road was spam, Dinty Moore beef stew, and wolf brand chili. Times have changed, now my truck fridge is packed with organic everything, craft beverages, etc.

Right next to the Spam was vienna sausages. I recall them not being bad as a kid, but I wouldn't touch one if I was starving to death now.

I'm never going to Vienna if that's the best they have to offer. What's the worst canned food? My mom use to feed us canned asparagus with mayonnaise!!!! Wtf is that! I didn't know what good asparagus was until I met my wife.

My grandparents fed me canned corn beef hash on a trip out west as a kid.
The picture on the can still haunts my dreams.

Fry it up in a pan and drop an egg or two on top. It hits the spot once in a while.

Austin, Minnesota, home of spam. Trips up north to Boundary waters always included this, but we usually caught enough fish that the can was not opened until a last day breakfast feast.
There's a museum for the SPiced hAM aficionados there in Austin, not to far off I-94.
The hickory smoked variation is pretty good- salty savory.

Ummm spam <homerdrool>
Slice it very thin and fry it up crisp like bacon, really pretty good stuff.

On the topic of canned meat;
Canned corned beef, best primary ingredient for trail hash ever.

Par bake some taters before the trip
Fry them up in grape seed oil because you don't have the good old Wesson oil around anymore.
Add the onions AFTER the taters get golden brown otherwise you get burnt onion
Bust out your canned corned beef, mash it up on a plate and fold it into the tater/ onion mix. (It must be in that funky trapezoidal can and originate from South America. The brand is not important it all comes from the same factory.) Copious amounts of black pepper and dry parsley are encouraged but not mandatory. You could also add granulated garlic powder if you want to impress your friends with you culinary prowess.
Serve with a big cup of campfire coffee and a bottle of ketchup.

I still like the Hormel canned hash. I can even eat it out of the can cold.

I hadn't had SPAM for about 15 years until last fall. I bought some of the SPAM singles to take with me on a camping trip. I fried it up in my cast iron and sliced it up to put in my grits. I couldn't eat it. On the plus side, the dog got a good breakfast.

As others have said, when we were in Hawaii 2 years ago it was every where. They liked to put it on rice and cover it in brown gravy, but I never partook in it.

Cant beat spam eggs and rice..... Us islanders love processed meats. lol

Introduced my boys to spam, and fried slices. It went over like thunder from heaven. For me, it was a little saltier than I membered it from years ago. Think I will introduce them to the "Deviled Meats" in those little round paper wrapped cans that I had in my youth on samwitches wrapped in nakins.

spam-fried-rice is da bomb, yo!
