Hello people, I'm wrting all way from south america, to tell you a bit of a pig I bought some months ago, and which I started restoring and I will keep me busy for quite some time.

It's an after 9/72 pig, with a very solid frame with a good looking body, but with a number of rust spot on the floor (quite extensive) and along the side of the roof because of an over used roof rack.

It came with an original 1B engine, no smog control, drum brakes, no power brakes, no power steering

Intended modifications:
1B turbo diesel engine
front disc brakes
power steering
power brakes
shackle lift
new floor, eliminate rust and fabricate new panels
fix roof, make new rain gutter
all around rust spot elimination and new steel panel fabrication

Any way, the idea would be if any of you guys with similar issues can give me hints or ideas of how to make new life for this cruiser a bir easier, that would be great and I would be extremly helpful. If this thread helps somebody on their own project, so be it!!!!

See you

Good looking pig you've got there, any idea how it ended up with the diesel? Any pics of the engine? BobM is making some reproduction panels for the 55, I know he is making the front floor panels anyway. No idea if it would be worth shipping them down there, here is a link to his thread:

Can't wait to see you get her back on the road!

Welcome aboard! You picked the right group of people, to hang out with. Any problem or idea you come up with, let them have it. They got the answer.

Good luck on your project, looks like a great start.

I love those ambulance doors!

X2!! and the huge TLC tag on the back.
I'll keep your contact info as we have some projects down there and I'd love to check out your rig in person.

Cheers!

In regards to the engine. It actually came with a 1f engine and a four speed. Nevertheless, the majority of fj40 and fj55 coming into this country came with 1b engine. Most important of all, parts for the 1f and 2f engine down here are really scarce and expensive, on the other hand you can buy a whole rebuild kit for the 1b engine (rings, gasket sets, bearings, etc) for around 500 american dollars. Plus, you can fairly easily find a five speed transmission, so I'm getting rid of the four speed. The five speed is exactly the same, except that its a bit longer because of the extra gear. You can find it here, since that box came with the Toyota Dyna Trucks or Hino Trucks. Those trucks shared the engine and gear boxes with cruisers in the 70s and 80s.

I´m gonna take pictures of the engine tomorrow so you guys can see it!!!

I'm also gonna post pictures of the sand blasted front and how I'm going about building new parts in the fender area. Plus some nasty rust spots I've encountered.... and figuring out how the hell to deal with them

Well, you jumped right into. Long road ahead, but I believe you will be happier with it, done that way. What's your plan for paint, same color or changing.
