I never got to talk with Terry in depth but he was always very kind to Karen and I. Our first year at SAS when we felt a little bit like outsiders, he came right up, said hi, and asked about my VERY rusty 60. Chatted with him a little bit this year as well. His workingman's 40 was truly in the spirit of SAS, at least in my opinion. It wasn't flashy, the paint was old, the engine wasn't a fancy swap - he just had his old truck that kept, well, trucking along, and he liked to get out and have fun with it. That's what we're all there for: to bring whatever we got and have fun. I always had a lot of respect for that and for his kindness. We'll miss seeing him there next year.

Edited to add: Karen mentioned that Shay was very sweet to her and that they chatted maybe more than I knew. I 100% agree with that. Despite our interactions being limited, both of them brought us into the fold over the years and that went a long way towards us feel comfortable and getting in the groove of SAS. Solid humans, the both of them.

I'm glad that at SAS6 I got to spend a day with Terry. He needed a brake booster and I needed a fuel line. Got to hear some of his good stories of his times off-roading over some good breakfast while waiting for his booster to show up.

Have fun on the those trails in your old cruiser you talked so much about Terry.

Terry being a slow 40, and me being a slow 40, we got stuck at the back. Being I am a stinky slow 40, I got stuck at the very back and followed Terry and Shay around most of the week this year.

Really sweet folks. We were camped next to Terry and Shay this year, so I got to see, hear and smell him trying to get that beater of a 40 started every morning with me thinking “no way he’s getting on or off that mountain in that”. Well, every time I’d see them on the trail they were having a blast, then I was thinking “old Cruiser bad ass right there”! A testament to the 40 series in its original form. Also, 42 years of marriage speaks volumes. Many adventures! RIP

Yessir, Terry was always excited about getting out on the trail each day. Just one of those people I looked forward to seeing each year. Terry and Shay are always wiling to jump in and help wherever we needed.
Good folks to have our group. Die hard, can do attitude is what keeps these old tractors going.
Terry will be missed. We are truly a community drawn to eachother through a love for these cool old Cruisers.

My first trip to SAS I met Terry , I was driving the 45 and he was camped next to Maggie and myself. Like all Cruiser owners we were drawn to each others rigs. Sharing upgrades and issues LOL Each year after that we would always find each other and share a few stories. Like so many he loved sharing his passion for his rig and willing to offer any help or advice he could. RIP Terry and may you always find the perfect line to wheel

Solid Axle Summit 4 was a special event in many regards for me personally. I had the pleasure of meeting Terry Lane after he drove his old 1970 FJ40 up from southern Arizona. I then had the honor of trail leading a handful of trails that week. One being a 40 run up Imogene pass with a small group of land Cruisers and Terry was so thankful for me trail leading. He was having so much fun and it really showed. He was so talkative and genuinely loved being submerged in the Cruiser community, memories I’ll never forget!
My oldest son Dylan rode shotgun with Terry on another run to the Silver jack reservoir and enjoyed his friendly demeanor and the raw utilitarian character of Terry’s old Cruiser.
When @Kleatus blew a radiator going up Corkscrew “Graciously,Terry @AZOKIE offered to sacrifice his day of wheeling to escort Klaus and his family back to camp.” He was always willing to lend a hand where it was needed.

The last photo of Terry after SAS7 I took as he was loading up the 40. You will be missed!

RIP Friend 🙏 may your trail always lead you to the right and perfect campsite!

So sad to see this. We camped next to them at SAS4 (and 5 too IIRC). What a genuine gentlemen Terry was. I was always glad to see him and spend some time chatting about our old trucks and life in general. He'll be missed. RIP friend.

What a great Guy !!

You will be missed.

RIP my friend

I’ve been hammering away at projects on my 60 lately and I keep thinking the deadline is July 20th or so, so that everything is wrapped up and ready for SAS8.

Restored & rebuilt carb
Rebuilt t-case
2Low modification
Rebuilt H42
New clutch kit
New rear main seal
New transmission mount
New oil pan and gasket
4Plus U-bolt flips x4
Rebuilt power steering pump
New U-joints for the front driveshaft
Maybe get the rear shaft rebuilt
Maybe chop up my front bumper and fab a winch mount
->This is all phase two baselining I didn’t get done before last year.

I’ve had a rebuilt head sitting on a shelf for two years and if I get the time I’m going to fit the air rail plugs and install it. I’ll pull the Air Injection system obviously, since I’m plugging the holes in the head. We’ll see if that happens. A surgical “desmog” will happen at some point.

Since SAS7 I’ve already knocked out Aussie sliding cargo windows. Gotta do some projects for the dog!

I’m working on a couple new Cruiser Trash Parts projects that might get installed by then too. Universal cargo panel speaker mount for 60s modeled on the OEM brackets in 62s, a front dome/map light that fits to the rear view mirror mount, and a fire extinguisher mount. There are versions of the latter two that exist - neither of them fit a 60, so I’ll release stuff that actually works. There’s other skunk works projects happening too, but they’re still in early stage development.

Whatever, that’s all just work … My point was I’m excited to go wheel with friends in the San Juans already.

Trying to get it back together, but life keeps getting in the way
I think I still have time :)

I am (was) planning on bringing a new rig . I only had a few smalls left to do. But I tore it up pretty bad yesterday snow wheeling . Hope I have time and funds to get it ready. The new shop is eating time and funds more than expected. If not I'll have to bring the same old boring 80! @Broski If I have it ready maybe on the way out after the event We can go run Calamity or topless in Montrose. You will like those trails they are nice technical trails that a well built street driven rig can do . They are kind of the intro trails to Montrose. Here the only pic I will post of the new rig until the event!

I'm going to try and finally make this event. No big plans for summer trips this year....
