Well I’m on the list! Super excited to go, I think I will stop at MOAB before and check that out as well. What gear is typically recommended? Any CB radios etc?

Also I see quite a few trucks from California, is there a convoy organized yet?

CB is reccomend and has worked for years. A small GMRS / FRS radio is a better option.

I’m highly impressed with the $100 ones we installed. Leaves CB in the dust.

I'm sure lots of folks will bring extras too. I'll have my handheld CB in addition to the HAM, happy to let someone borrow it if needed.

A huge difference for sure. Easy set up and great reception. A FCC license is required but doesn't involve a test.
Its like $85 for 10 years and covors immediate family. This particular radio uses the GMRS/ FRS freqs.

Someone in the group will chime in and fill us in on the requirements I hope.

This is a great platform to get into the HAM radio area. The complete set up of this simple radio is way cheaper than buying a $60 CB, $50 antenna, a way to mount it and a coax cable to make it all work. Then you have to go through all the tuning with an SRW meter to get trail communication that is hit or miss.

Toyota Trails would love to publish an article about this get together. Anyone have any interest in writing an article? You will be paid from TLCA .

I will gladly entertain the idea of a SAS4 article, We will be bringing our 2 sons (13 & 14) in the Forty for four this year as well! Toyota Trails - September/October 2019 Issue

FYI
Colorado is now under a mask mandate as of midnight.
Masks are to be worn in all public places where social distancing isn't able to happen.
Mostly in stores, restaurants, etc.
San Juan county has been pretty stringent on this as well...

never mind. I wasnt far enough into the thread to see that this has been brought up already. Carry on

Getting close to crunch time, but would this be worth getting before the trip or ham? I gave up on the cb.

That should be fine. I used @Saddletramps hand held Baofeng last year it was good. Better than CB range...

Effectively the same order that Ouray, Silverton and Telluride are already following.

Rain makes everything better...

This would be awesome to see in TT! I'd love to contribute but I'm not sure I recall much of anything from my university writing classes - far too many long necks were around back then.

It doesn't have to be perfect....just honest and fun and light. It will be edited for publishing by a copy editor. Photos for an article do not need to come from a $5k camera and lens. The newer iPhones take good enough photos for a story. Generally speaking... the only spot in Toyota Trails where high quality photo gear is required is for the prominent photo spots (cover, toc, trail views and trails end). A good camera always helps, but if folks are coming to the mountains of Colorado... someone is gonna have a good camera and can get all the good shots.

I've spent a little time in the area over the years.... but my axle isn't solid. I can lag behind the group and get all the shots if needed. I have a couple secret spots too.
