Has this been done for older land cruisers? I have just ordered the damper and hinge and gonna modify the 80 series one and make it work... will update if it works seamlessly.

I'm interested as well for my 100. Added Huracan fab tailgate storage mod to mine and it's really heavy with stuff loaded in it. I was going to order all the parts and try to make it work, but waiting for someone else to be the guinea pig.

Just FYI

megazip has these parts
Hinge is $36.02
Damper is $48.79 (in the US this part is listed at over $200....)
shipping is in the 30-40 range depending on if you ordering more parts.

I plan to do it. Thanks to all the guys that posted

what a great upgrade

Got my parts from Amayama cheapest I could find

kinda easy
I didn't take the door completely off. (I was trying to squeeze the project in but needed the car...took hinge off and was still able to shut the door in the middle of the project)

I was worried about struggling with the tension bar too

It was a struggle
i did the dremel pilot hole trick
then used a burr from the other side. burred it large enough to fit
screwed the bolt from the inside out to help guide my burring
used a little touch up paint to cover the not so pretty burr hole
was hard to remove and replace the hinge bolts to the body. Was very tight but was able to inch them to being tight

Works great. Every LC200 should do it.

Getting the Damper on is easy, getting the rod to the hinge.....its another story
What series are you working with? I noticed on the 100-series if you moved to the passenger side hinge it seems to have a wider flat area to the right side where the damper could possible be mounted in-line. I don’t have any parts because I just found these threads today while researching this mod.

100 series. I believe the passenger side was not considered because of space. It's a blurr to me but the driver's side has the best chance.

not sure if there are any 100 series toyota guys in here, but i have found a genuine lexus part that should fit Toyotas and allow us to have soft open aswell. From looking in the tread it seems like this is all 200 series owners, and i would be willing to help find a lexus part that is avaible at local lexus dealers and not only from ebay and shipping from japan.

I am a 100 series LX470 owner and have been watching the thread to see what pops up. I have a Huracan Fab tailgate storage, with a bunch of gear stored in it. It's heavy, so I would love to add this mod to my truck.

on the trail tailor rear tailgate locker one person noted his dampners only helped a little once fully loaded....just FYI

This was exactly my thought. I've seen/felt/used a lot of the storage tailgates on customer vehicles in the ADGU shop. They're generally WAY heavier than the OEM tailgate. I can't imagine the 200 OEM soft close would do much. It softens the factory tailgate, but those Huracan tailgates seem to be... 3 or 4 times the weight?

I think you need a gas damper to stand a chance of properly damping those storage tailgates.

Ok, decided to tackle this today. Here first is a list of parts

LX Left Hinge - 66120-60021
Damper - 67028-60010 (Ebay Japan $40 plus $20 shipping) See previous posted link
Bolt for Damper - 91673-A0622
Check Cables - 65706-60030 ( I went ahead and replaced both, as the originals were pretty rusty)
Torsion Bar - 68870-60020 (You may not need this but mine had rusted out and broke, more on this later. Ordered 4 new bolts for this too, same bolt as above 91673-A0622)

Tools

10 and 12 mm sockets
Panel popper kit - noted previously
T-40 hex driver (to get check cables off / on)
Small drill bit and 7/32 bit.

First step is getting interior panel off

Remove 4- 10mm bolts. I used the panel popper kit to get started on removing the interior panel. Once you get one or two out you can get your hands in there and pull up the rest. It requires a little force, but fortunately I didn't break any of the rivets.

Next was getting the check cables off. This proved to be the toughest part for me, as they were rusted to the point that the T-40 hex driver was stripping out the cable end. I ended up snipping the cables and using locking plyers to turn the cable ends. Seems like the ends are made of a soft metal, stripping out that easy. View attachment 1575917

Next remove the tailgate. I had a Rubbermaid bin handy and put a towel over it. Have something ready to rest the tailgate on once its off.

Remove 4 - 12mm bolts holding the hinges to the gate.

Next step is remove the left hinge from the body, attached by 3 - 12mm bolts. - I used an extension to get in there

Next I mounted the new hinge to the tailgate using the 2 - 12mm bolts
Installed! Thanks for the write up.

Found the hinge and the damperer on Aliexpress for under $50. Came with a template for the captured nut. This was game changer. 🍻
