So I went to look at this Cruiser yesterday..

Best4x4xfar - If you're looking this far west yo may have seen the 1997 at Hansel Honda in Petaluma as well?

I looked at it today and thought I'ld post the results for those interested. Kinda helps me learn what to look for too.

The body was straight, paint was in very good condtion, very few chips and scratches. No rust anywhere but on the bottom of the control arms where they were scratched.

Had a hitch
Lockers - that worked once I put it in low range
a little hesitation when accelerating from about 10 mph. strong otherwise.
noticed a wierd almost grinding sound from right front twice when making a left turn at a stop sign. Couldn't reproduce it anywhere else.

Brakes feel was soft but they worked well.

Interior - everything was functional
gray leather very worn throughout the vehicle even for the age (only 78K miles) maybe I'm being picky.
stains on the carpet throughout the vehicle as well. Cigarette burns in the head liner near the driver's window. Odd smell, not like smoke, but certainly due to the previous owner who was a smoker.

The engine compartment was detailed of course. No signs of leaks at the head gasket itself (can't hardly see it under all the crap - how do you guys do it?. On the drivers side block, there was what looked like greenish/brown film (for lack of better term). I imagine if alot of coolant had leaked onto the block and burned thats what it might look like. Oil was new, tranny fluid was new, coolant was new (green, but new). The bottom of the coolant resevoir was brown with alot of crap on the sides of the container.

The "closer" salesmen was a TOTOL A$$hole. So much so I told him that and walked out which isn't like me at all. Needless to say they weren't happy that I had $15K cash I was willing to spend on a Landcruiser but they wanted $16,800.

EDIT: Forgot to mention there was some oil on top of the front axle housing but I couldn't tell where it was coming fomr. The centerline of the vehicle also had a good coating of oil and dirt, though not a ton.

Common guys you're all starting to sound like junk.

It's a 40th, which I wouldn't care but some would think that's worth something
very clean interior
nice exterior
80k MILES
LOCKERS

regardless of what you can argue for a price reduction this guy will easily get his price. Somebody will fall in love with this truck and buy it on the spot. I probably paid a little to much for my truck, I don't consider myself a sucker, just happy as hell at getting just what I was looking for and enjoying every mile of it.

This cruiser sounds cherry! The things you mentioned are common maintenance and to find a last year 80 with under 80K and lockers in your described condition is getting tougher everyday. I agree this kid is not looking for a sucker, just someone who appreciates his ride as much as he does. Keep looking dude, maybe you can find a sucker! :)

Without a Center diff switch and having it engaged, the lockers will only work in low.

As I understand it, the lockers will only work when the center diff is locked. The center diff is locked only when you go to low. Thats why the center diff switch is an option. It allows you to lock the center in high.

Talk with E9999, for quite a while he wa in search of the perfect 80. He found pretty much what you have and I doubt you'll be able to knock off much of what blue book is.

It looks normal to me as far as what you have rerported. Axle job is expected with all purchases now. The brakes are like mine when I bought my truck, some pads and a bleed and they will probably be fine.

Honestly what you have found, I would consider normal for a truck that has had average care. Better to get a truck like this where you can properly do the maintenance yourself verses getting one that someone else has scew up the maintenance on.

How did the PS cooler look? That should be about ready for replacement.

hell, mine didn't have bad Birf seals and leaks, or windshield cracks etc...

75k on yours, it needs an axle job. So how does the state of the seals change that?

Anything over 60k needs an axle job and regardless of how good the axle looks there is no value in it looking good. I wouldn't even put any value on the axle job being done as more often than not the job has been botched. I'd put a higher value on a truck with some common issues that nobody has touched over one that someone has. Atleast with the untouched one you know where you stand as far as stuff being worn out. If someone else has been in there who knows what BS had been done.

right, having the seals be good or them being bad with possibly bad lube in the birfs, low oil, contaminated diff oil etc, is the same thing now?

E

absolutely, job still needs to be done and no added value.

More often than not it's a clean dry looking axle that will grenage a birf. Lubrication whether it's grease of gear oil will protect the birfs from damage.

IMO the only thing to be concerned about with the front axle is clicking while turning, if it's quiet it's good.

I'll send a message to Toyota to tell them that they can leave the seals out next time since they don't do any good...

If you could describe the grinding noise as a series of 'pops' at a pretty fast frequency, that is the birfield. The axle seal has probably broken down, allowing the 90wt diff fluid to wash out the grease in the knuckle. Rebuilding the axle (pulling the birf and putting new seals and grease in) may or may not get rid of the noise. For the most part, the noise is just an annoyance; it takes A LOT more wear that an initial noise to grenade the birf. New OEM birfs (the only way to go) cost about $400 a pop, no pun indended.

The oil filter is located above the axle on the driver side of the engine. Changing it can leave a bunch of oil on top of the axle if you aren't super-quick on the removal/installation.

Thanks to everyone for the CONSTRUCTIVE comments. I edited my earlier post, because I felt it was too easily misinterpreted. Bottom line the owner feels he can get more, and I can’t blame him for giving it a try. From the majority of the comments here, it doesn’t seem like my reasoning was too out of line. I expect to have to do some PM, but if I am going to have to drop significant money on it once I get it home, I expect to pay closer to the bottom of the book range, not the top, is that so wrong? Thanks again for the comments, more are welcome as well.

As for this comment. Hmmmm, first post, just registered the same day. I’m sure I’m not the only one skeptical of your opinion or affiliation…

Well I don't know who that is......Not the owner

Hey- just a rookie like yourself, trying to help you out with my experiences. Living down in the south and keeping an eye on late model 80s and 450s I thought I could add some constructive comments. Look at carsearchusa.com and you will see vehicles very similar to what you described for 18K-19K. Regardless, good luck on finding a nice 80, hopefully you can find a sucker to give you about 5K for that POS 96 Land Rover. :D

CARSEARCHUSA ?!? You’ve got to be kidding me. For your own safety (assuming you are still looking), do a little research. Here is a link to a few threads on this board about the place,

https://forum.ih8mud.com/search.php?searchid=103042

there are even more out on the Internet. Scam artist shop it would seem. Several of his ads for low mileage pristine Cruisers have been on Autotrader for years, when you call, oh I just sold that one. Run some CARFAX reports on the VINs he supplies. They never match up to the advertised vehicle. Many times the color has been noted when titled, and they NEVER seem to match the color of the vehicle he is selling. Florida is one of those states unscrupulous sellers use to “scrub” salvage titles, since they don’t carry over the designation. Just a friendly warning, STAY AWAY from carsearch usa…

Start looking at some more legitimate ads, try cars.com, autotraderonline.com, etc… You’ll find some dealers with these high prices, but for the most part (average) you will find ’97 Cruisers with similar mileage listed anywhere from mid to high 15s to high 17s (I'm on these sites EVERY day). You will see much higher, and much lower from time to time. Not to mention dealer pricing is always higher than private party sale, as you will see in the book values for such. And besides, these are asking prices, not selling prices. Did you ever sell anything and build in some room to negotiate? I think it is safe to say that most people selling an automobile do.

Hey best4x4xfar -

FWIW, I found my '96 (no lockers) on Autotrader.com, it was a trade-in at a Jeep/Chrysler dealer in Gaithersburg.

I went there at 8am on Saturday, found it sitting in the lot, and immediately crawled underneath and started nosing around...I'm sure they thought I was nuts.

It was very clean underneath, good rubber, 62K, non-smoker...I was out the door for $18K total, home by 1pm with a paid-for truck, why waste more time looking?

Anyway, why not check all the 80s/450s at near-by dealers? (there's a few) You might get lucky.

(btw, I found a good Cruiser mech in the Laurel area.)

Must have gotten lucky

Just picked up a 97, 40th Edition w 102,000 miles, no lockers for $11,500. This was only the second 80 I looked at--I have a 62 so I have experience with LCs and know what to look for. Truck was in great shape! Was from a used car dealer in Peaksville, NY, but was a local one owner truck and the owner kept it in real nice shape.

Just got it back from my mechanic and had all the fluids changed. Can't wait to put some miles on it!

I guess it's not how many, but how much luck you have when you're looking. I thought it was going to take me much longer, but as I've heard from others--when you see something good, you better move fast!

Good luck. You will find something!

hold off for one with lockers...

Hi Best4x4xfar. You fail to mention that I graciously picked you up and dropped you off at the airport, and spent over 2 hours with you, which I hope no one in this forum ever has to go through. I was completely straightforward and honest about the history and maintenance of my cruiser. To me, my 80 is worth more that the 15k you offered. You wouldn't budge on your offer, so why should I budge on my price? I am not looking for a sucker.

I have owned Toyota trucks since I was 16 and I have great respect for this forum and its members, but not you. Its not my fault it took you until your mid-30s to figure out Land Cruisers are the best vehicles on the planet. Oh, by the way, I've decided to keep my cruiser and will be enjoying every mile of it. I think I've got some change in my ashtray for that Discovery.

As far as anyone checking out a cruiser for this guy, don't waste your time, he'll never be satisfied.

not necessarily -- if one never uses their center diff lock switch, why bother with lockers, except to be a BSD on IH8MUD?

A big mud welcome to:

and any other IH8MUD newbies that became non-lurkers during this thread.

Also, good luck to Best4x4xfar in your search for an 80. I sincerely hope you find what you want. We'll give you some slack but be forewarned, a repeat of E999999999's "buying experience" (aka The Odyssey) on top of your 'sucker' faux paux in this thread along with Disco ownership could make you an unpopular fella in these parts. :D
