Edit:

Where/When: Saturday Jan 4th, meet at the A&W in Sooke at 8:45am; roll out at 9:00am.
Goal: Explore San Juan Ridge, reach ~1000m altitude in hopes of finding snow to have fun in as well as good views and small lakes. No gates to contend with where we will be going.
Notes: Bring your own food/drink for lunch. All 4wd Toyotas welcome. As always be prepared with tools/recovery gear and for cold weather. Roads might be scratchy in areas depending on where we end up (we can avoid this if nice trucks show up (like themorb)).

Confirmed:
60 Sweatyforehead
mini truck Gsb15
70 GTSSportCoupe

Lets plan one. Any ideas?

One suggestion was to do a run up Island, and have breakfast first with some of the members up there that we don't see much.

I can do Jan the 4th,5th,18th or 19th. Don't know if those times would work for anyone else here.

I'd come, but I wouldn't want to hold you guys back if the trail gets scratchy... I also don't have proper tires or sliders yet. But if its just driving around in the snow and cooking some dogs for lunch that would be fun :)

Might come along.

Heading to Van to look at a Tacoma TRD with a friend on the 30th. He might want to bring it along for its maiden voyage..... any complaints about a Tacoma tagging along? I can guarantee after dropping 30K plus on a new truck "scratchy" trails will be out of the question for him.

My 60 is hiding in the back corner of the yard again, scared of the brine and salting trucks.

Oh yeah. Merry Christmas and Happy Festivus.

Scratches ok, I'm not in for dents. But I am open diffs and no sliders either, so whatever that offers.
Bring the Tacoma, a Toyota is a Toyota.

I think we could have a run that is scratch/dent free, and still have a lot of fun. Would be nice if we could include everyone on this run. Snow is enough of a challenge as we gain altitude that I don't think it is necessary to find any really gnarly trails that require sliders/armour.

I'm definitely into lunch on the trail as well; hotdog roast over a fire would be great.

Sounds like weekend of the 4th 5th is the best so far; so maybe lets plan for the 4th/Saturday?

Definitely all Yotas welcome. Airdown seems to really help in the deep snow, so just be prepared for that...

In terms of location, I'm easy. Would be nice to not have to deal with gates/attendants though. That said, the snow run we did last year seemed to be a nice location. Wombat, Slowandsteady, do you guys have any suggestions?

Have a read boys. This was really the day h*ll froze over. I can see the Potato cursing and swearing in disgust as this thread re appears.

Moral(s) of the story. Don't go on snow runs in deep valleys. Don't bring Ryan.

Way ahead of you.

Snow run? FAWK THAT.

As I said in previous thread, two double locked SOA on 37's, and a stock 42. Gee...what could go wrong...

for the most part it was pretty fun tho, being convinced we'd be stuck out there for the night wasn't particularly cool but, didn't turn out that way..

seeing Jay's giant ass hurtling towards me was even less cool.

but, aside from being wet and cold, all good.

BTW, I guess the obvious for Vr Isl is what snow? Maybe by the 4th, but not looking good.

Haha, that is a really good point. I just assumed there would be some snow at the higher elevations by now, but I think you're right.

They are forcasting rain for the next week or so, not sure if that means there will be snow higher up or not. Might have to do this run later in Jan, or even into Feb?

I say still do a run! I'm not a giant fan of snow runs but I just want to get out and have some fun.

I'm up for a non-snow run also. The thing is, some of the guys interested in the snow run don't want to scratch their vehicles. That is perfect with a snow run as we wouldn't get too far and the snow is enough of a challenge. With a non snow run, I imagine we might end up on some scratchy roads. Could do a couple different runs at different times though.

I'm open to any ideas. Did you have an area in mind? One place I had in mind for a non snow run is the San Juan ridge between Jordan River and Port Renfrew. We found a way into that area last month. It's the high elevation ridge between the San Juan River and Loss Creek. Parallel to the Kludahk trail. Some neat views, little lakes, bogs etc. up there. A neat place to explore. A bit of a drive for you guys from up island though...

Pretty easy to get up there and its at a nice elevation for snow. Agreed it would be a good spot. I have some pics from up there.... somewhere.
