In poking around on the underside I noticed this "tube" was loose? Is this the air pump rail? Or any way associated with exhaust? This is laying below the engine looking up. Thanks!

This piece on top of the motor between the air cleaner and the carb. Actually called a air injection manifold. Follow your hoses from the smog pump up to the egr valve then to the air rail. Runs from the front of the motor to the back.

that is a straight exhaust leak in the engine bay- the best way to learn the smells of your motor- and the best way to die on a long road trip...those things are notorious for leaking. get it sealed up before you spend any more time behind the wheel...

the piece in the pic accused of leaking is the EGR take-off. many times the stud holes need to be tapped, and sometimes the manifold needs to be milled to make a good seal. get gaskets, find a replacement pipe- or desmog and plug that take-off...

Thats the EGR pipe and has a gasket. Should be tight and can be a source of an exhaust leak. Also obviously check the manifold to exhaust joint.

I'm desmogged with no cat and a trollhole carb. No smells unless I overfill the tank.

With my old truck, a guy I used to have do repairs (before I realised I needed to do my own work) replaced my gas tank cuz it leaked at the seam. Even after replacement w/ a used tank from CruiserParts it still stank. Now years later and w/ more awareness, it probably was from the full neck or in that area cuz I could always smell it if I overfilled and walked near that corner.

Never smelled any gas in our 60's even with some exhaust leaks (egr pipe)

Now I got this 87 chevy truck and I noticed for a few months it did smell like gas....but its just my go to the dump truck...so whatever. 2 weeks ago I was leaving to the dump and my wife said it looks like gas leaking under the truck....yeah yeah. ...so I looked.....holly cow....it was shooting gas out of the electrical connection that was part of the dual tank switch valve. It was like a rolling bomb....

And yes I did replace the valve ; )
