Does everyone have a little bit of fumes seeping into the truck?

Trucks desmogged, runs well. But seems to have fumes coming in, and seems just as present with the windows open. I can drive with the windows closed no problem. Just wondering if this is indicative of an issue or it's normal.

Thanks

get a CAT...and a carb rebuild...it's the only things that are different on my rigs that don't gas me out any more; the 62 got all new exhaust with CATs, and it otherwise in decent operating tune...the 2 F also got new exhaust, but mostly it's about mixture management...and clean CATS...

David, I have been wondering this same thing. I have a 84 60 that has a bit of a exhaust fumes coming in. I have new exhaust from the Cat back. I am wondering if there is an exhaust leak up near the front?

Are you getting exhaust fumes or fuel fumes?

Mark.

When the rear quarters or wheel wells rust out fumes get sucked in with the windows down but not up.

No fumes from my 62 after repairing exhaust leaks.

Take a look at all the evap hardware behind the passenger rear kick panel near gas spout as well.

Also check for vacuum leaks...

"Fumes" can be exhaust fumes or raw gasoline fumes. Which one?

Gasoline fumes while driving in a 60 usually come from a leak at the vapor separator connections located behind the right rear panel.

Exhaust fumes can eek in if there's gaps in the body seals.

It's part of the plan to kill brain cells so you will continue to spend irrationally on the truck.

As far as the carbrebuild, it's a recent jimC rebuild and runs well. If I drive it every few daysitstars faster then any car I've ever owned.

As far as the exhaust, I've never checked it's the car is relatively quiet.

Charcoal cannister? Is it working correctly? As @OSS said, venting and such into the cab. I'm pretty sure they are related.

Also check the passenger side rear 1/4 panel interior. There are many fuel related parts inside that may be leaking or venting fuel vapors inside. I have seen pictures of several inches of fuel trapped inside this area.

I've had fuel leak into the rear quarter from a leaking gas cap. Because the gasket between the body and fuel neck was cracked, the fuel ran down inside instead of outside. New cap, no more problem.

I had exhaust fume smells because one piece of tubing from the air pump was actually cracked right at the beginning of the metal pipe from the air pump..
removed air pump and no smello

It is a good idea to check how far the pipe extends past the edge of the body. I have had fume issues inside when the pipe doesn't stick out far enough. No rust holes whatsoever in my rear corners.

If it's an exhaust smell coming in the drivers window then check the air pump rail. It runs down the top of the engine looks like a diesel fuel rail. Mine had two small pea size holes in the smaller lines going down to the head. It was second small line from the firewall...closest to the carb. Start the truck with the engine cold and the air cleaner removed and run your hands around the air pump rail before the engine gets too warm. I replaced mine but had some issues with frozen air valves and tore one up while removing.

Fuel smells for me came from the top of the fuel tank. If you fill your tank up then park on an hill facing up the hill. You may smell or even see gas running out if your tank fill is rusted and busted.

also check that the flaps in the rear quarter vents are present and not broken off...especially exhaust side.

my wife tells me I have no sense of smell. But the only time I smell fumes in my FJ60 is when I have the lift gate is open, and then it is really bad (it's so bad it starts to hurt my eyes). It gets better if I open the front windows. This phenomenon leads me to believe there is a low pressure zone created at the back of the truck. I would check your seals around the lift and tail gates and check for holes in the bed floor or wheel wells.

Any pictures of this air pump rail? is it visible from the bottom or the top of the engine?
