"(drain) slits were impossible for me to find"
The drain slits are on the inner aspect of the lower backside of the rocker panels ie: not visible looking from the side of the vehicle especially with the running boards installed. You have to get on your back, slide under the vehicle and look up at the inner or backside of the rocker panels.
IMHO it's better to not use a metal tool (or drill any holes) as you want to avoid exposing bare metal which will become a rust magnet. IME a plastic zip tie is plenty strong enough to remove any blockages, you may have to try different sizes. Definitely prime and paint the hole you drilled or it will rust.
