So Dave, the Chevy rubbers are not lubricated? What about spermicide?

Nononxynol covers it.

I did a cursory google search and found a company that has tailgate chain slip covers for old Chevy trucks, around $5.00 a set, just in case someone was interested in more than just old bike tires.

I bought some of these this week. I got two sets, $5.00 each, one for my 45 and one for the 40.

I unbolted the end fixed to the bed and tried lubing it up with dish soap...no luck. So, I just cut the link and took the bed bracket off, fed a piece of wire through the rubber and pulled the things on, still had to use the dish-soap as it's a tight fit.

Then I just reinstalled the bed bracket, bent the link back together and then welded the link.

I haven't driven it yet to see how much quieter it is, but I know it will be better than it was.

Thanks for the tip 557!

I sewed up some black chair covering type vinyl (of the sort you get at a fabric store) on a regular sewing machine. I sewed it inside out (with the backing out) and then turned this 'tube' right side out so that the pretty black vinyl was on the outside. I sized it for my galv. tailgate chain first, pinned it, and then removed the chain. It fits well, cost nothing (leftover vinyl) and looks nice.

You can buy pre-dipped vinyl coated chain at Home Deperate, but you won't get black - it's yellow, or some other color.
