On my 77 '40, US market, LHD, I replaced my slave cylinder and wondered what the bracket mounted in the forward bolt is for. I took it off since I didn't see that it supported anything. Mine is same as this interwebs pic. TIA

Although I have no idea since my '73 was mounted on the drivers (left side of the block) side, you might want to indicate what year you are dealing with and whether it is US or non-US version.
 
My 77 doesn't have this bracket but it could have held the speedo cable which sails right past it (if you are RHD) I guess?

And yes, my spring is missing - I made a new bracket and it's on the shelf waiting to be fitted.
