When in Sept are you going ?

the answer to my question is summed up here
iGaQQ4e.jpg

it's not the cleaner coming through the valve... it's the cleaner that's on the floor of the coolant passages. New heads - I could/will use the parts from these heads to complete my other Vortec heads - but time and money both conspire to simply replace them with some cheap, Summit Racing Vortec heads.

the other thing, I still do SAR and couldn't use this (though it would have been helpful) last week - given the time of simply bolting on new, and the money part - never delude yourself into thinking rebuilding parts is always the cheapest option... and here we are. What I probably will do with these heads - I have some bare Vortec heads and I may do a valve job and assemble those heads with the parts from these heads.

as many know, I'm building an 86 Blazer. It's on tons with cross-over steering and coil springs rather then leaf springs. Finding a sway bar is, of course, a challenge - but I found a solution that isn't $600.
what you see here is a CPP (central performance parts) aftermarket sway bar for a 73-91 squarebody 2 wd truck

to be honest, I'm not sure I could have built a better fitting custom one

the basics is it's 1 1/2 tube 38-42" wide (to the arms). I do have to weld tabs onto the axle and get heims (I may use poly bushings).... but here's the rub. It's $200 delivered from Summit Racing.

use it, don't use it, but it is an option that would have worked on my '40 if it'd been available when I built it.
it WILL be soft, so if you want to corners at speed - look elsewhere (something in a solid 1 1/2" bar)... I'll post a pic when I get the tabs on the axle.

time to remove the other head
aT260LK.jpg

and the hits keep coming... the bushing fell out of the bottom of this aftermarket column - but that wasn't the worse thing somehow the lower borgeson joint now rattles side to side. I didn't think it was possible... but it is. dammit

back to removal
iH1kmVV.jpg

I'm really going to test these... one of the bolts... I won't say I can't - I can - but there is no way I'm pulling the head again to get the header out so that I can open up a hole - it leaked before...
fun part about this picture - it convinced me not to change headers... there's no real difference in port size
pC6bbSQ.jpg

functionally the heads are the same - but they're not identical
jKGmdPX.jpg

see the almost cathedral look to the new heads? that ain't there on the old heads... good thing I didn't just buy one head
igHiMk4.jpg

n6HYI6V.jpg

and back together.. new head gaskets
lkiosA6.jpg

gave up when I came up missing a gasket... I'm sure I have it, but I've been working on it 12 hours at this point
Ez2tLQf.jpg

one thing for certain - on anything I care about, I'm buying the gaskets individually.... the quality difference, even in the FelPro line, is quite remarkable
NZYr8XF.jpg

The diff between gasket and port is substantial. I like the port shape & size on the old head better, IMO.

and the saga continues
first, got coolant in it
ol2peIah.jpg

wIMKrXMh.jpg

it wouldn't reliably start, then it wouldn't start at all
iw5stETh.jpg

something is missing here
PgY1kgAh.jpg

oh there it is... I have no idea why both of these issues manifest themselves now, but here there are--- can't deny it, I'm looking right at it... but boy does it annoy.

parts arrived
kQNHqLgh.jpg

and back to the grind
9o1QDnFh.jpg

of course, battery was dead so that was a distraction
JGf6xEuh.jpg

didn't drive it because the battery needs to be charged.... love that optima batteries can take the full-discharge abuse and still work just fine... tomorrow I'll take it for a spin and see if all the money and work worked out.... then it'll probably go into storage somewhere near where I do SAR. My diesel colorado gets 35 mpg, the '40 ... 8. With gas prices what they are (and thanks Inslidiots for voting us the highest gas prices in the nation...) it's cheaper to rent a shed and drive the 50 miles in my daily...

In other news, the head cracking issue caused both... read it both... temp sensors to give up.... the one on the head above the cracked port - makes sense - but the one on the front under the thermostat? that was fun

emergency brake.... I put the bits on the t-case when I built this 8 years ago.... finally have all the parts to complete it (I hope)
g83A1yDh.jpg

need to put a hole in the floor
tEFsj0Wh.jpg

and weld a tab to the frame
CzzbR7Rh.jpg

parts for the other end....
Uv7uGA7h.jpg

to be continued

somehow I bent a rim... it's replacement
gf4sEA1h.jpg

underside is buttoned up - I need to revisit this once I get the brake lever in place... hint, not what I showed before
but the cable is through the floor
56UUI2Rh.jpg

meanwhile, Luigi is making friends with the new shop kitties. They are not impressed by they are warming to him... it's kind of fun to watch

time for some paint
first hinges
ywYgm2Uh.jpg

given they got rained on about 30 seconds after they flashed...
yTY7Gdyh.jpg

9eTDl2Oh.jpg

so you'll see this guy around a lot..... Paul is moving here, Don offered to help with bodywork.... who would say no to that? this guy has forgotten more about bodywork then I'll likely ever know.
iAWktlJh.jpg

not bad given how long that paint has sat

I'm so close to being able to mark 'done' on this one... of course, that means I'll just run it into the ground and rebuild it again in another 20 years.

finishing up the doors
nEKXHUy.jpg

and installed
h6LazBx.jpg

finish the brake cable and it's 'done' - from thereon should simply be maintenance
well, except I might put hydroassist on it - however, that would require a far better PS pump... and this just isn't a priority right now (meaning it's time to wheel it to the point it needs to be rebuilt again).
