Just a quick one, when recaulking seams should the primer go first or should the caulk go in first? :confused:
 
I would prime first then seam seal and then apply a coat of primer over the seam seal for a good paint bond this is only my personal opinion.
Either way if the seam seal cracks or shrinks moisture will get in and primer does not protect from rust it only creates a good bond to metal then creates a bond for the paint.
 
PRIME and don't even think of using CCOT's fast and firm 3M sealer.......Use SEM or another 2 part

Thanks for the advice, I figured as much but wasn't sure if the caulk had to adhere to bare metal that's all.
 
Seam seal only fills the gaps in joints and seams that are to big for primer and paint to fill and bridge the gap, you want to eliminate any gaps which water and dirt would hide in and eventually cause rusting.
 
I did it cause they said they used it. I did it and had to remove it all months later as it all shrank and cracked ll over the place.
 
I've used 3M flexible seam sealer for years without problems. Methinks the fast and firm obviously the wrong product for that application.
 
Are any of the seam sealers UV stable or do they all require a coat of paint? I need to reseal my gutters but not planning to paint/restore the top. Can the sealer be left uncoated? If not, is rattle-can adequate protection? I can't get SEM locally, but I can get the 3M two-part sealers from a local body supply and they will let me borrow their applicator gun.
 
All seam sealers require a top coat or they will chalk out and fade.On your roof seals use the self leveling kind.it took me almost 2- 220 ml 2k kits plio grip by valvoline (ashland chemical).it was 34.95 a tube.Not cheap but way better than the 1 k crap.If you can use there gun then score cuase they run like 40 -50 bucks.I scraped my rails all out then put some chassis saver (like por 15 in the rails then the seam sealer then primed and painted the truck.The self leveling lays out nice you cant even see any seam at all.
 
Thanks, I used the 3m heavy build sealer because I was also sealing the cowl on my 40 and my troopy. On the gutter I just cut/scraped out the damaged areas, cleaned them, and put a rust converter/primer down. Cleaned that after it dried and fingered in the 2k sealer. I wasn't able to borrow the gun, they loaned it out the day before, so I made my own from a cheap caulk gun. Rattlecan will have to do for the UV protection.
