Anything can fail with abuse and lack of maintenance. Look at the HG and PHH with the 1FZ. I personally have had zero issues with my auto or others I have built. Moreover never heard of someone having that bad of luck with the autos maybe your have a GM black cloud? Lol
These trucks weren't abused or under maintained. They never towed and failed under 30k miles. No transmission maintenance due. I'm not attacking GM. My wife's Grand Prix held up great. Apparently whatever is different between the 4l60 and 4l80 makes the 80 more reliable. I don't think anyone had common PHH or Head gasket failures under 30k miles. The problem isn't that the 4l60 broke. It was how early and how often. Maybe yours haven't failed because you built them and corrected whatever was wrong with them from the factory.
I wasn't referring that the PHH and HG fail at 30k just that all rigs have their bugs . It will be in Dallas. He's going to be having a Black 4BT FZJ80 after this one

The 4l60 is typically the 1/2 ton transmission. The 4l80 is the 3/4 and 1 ton behind the gasers. Then there is the Alison's. So yes, it will take a lot more a abuse.
Heat is the killer of transmissions. HD Towing package on GM's include a aux transmission cooler. My work van is a 5.3 LS 4l60 AWD with HD tow package with a huge aux cooler. I regularly load it till it's riding on the bump stops then drive it a couple hundred miles back to the warehouse. It will roll 100k tomorrow. Never a hint of trouble (and tomorrow it will leave me stranded lol ).
My stone stock used 4l60e that had 90k plus miles on it when I did my vortec swap is still chugging along. I have put about 20k on the GM drive train now and not one single issue (other than the orignal stock radiator cracking last week). I'd say they are pretty reliable. There's billions on the road (more than any other type of trans) so statistically speaking, it will appear that they fail more often than any other trans. In reality the failure rate is no different that any other. Keep them cool and they will last.
Slee 6 inch lift kit is in. Kind of disappointed to open the rear spring box to see that they are a pair of used springs. Nothing like dropping 5k on a lift kit to find used parts ... I am certain Slee will make it right. Up side the shocks are bad ass along with the arms.
Haven't spent much time on this build as I am wrapping up some other work but here is a pic of the intake we will be using Fast 102 intake which will allow up 100mm and up throttle bodies but we are staying with the 90mm.
