While I would really like to stock up on military Scepter fuel cans, they are expensive and becoming hard to find. Instead I found the civilian version that is CARB compliant online for less than $15 each. I got one today (figured I would check out one before buying a bunch) and it appears as good of quality as the military ones, though it only has a single handle instead of three, is red, and the opening is smaller. Hope this is useful to others.

Have you tried to fill your tank with one of them yet? Try it and report back.

Not using the included spout

Ive tried to fill my lawnmower and the LC with this spout and it sucks. Kind of funny because you spill more hazmat with this than the old metal jerry can spout. Not very earth friendly or California clean air compliant.

Instead I bought a shaker type siphon hose which works very well. I can refill without moving cans or using spouts. I am going to mount 2-4 cans on the roof rack and not move them to refill the tank.

I think this tool is well worth the money.
I am still happy with the cans, too. I've added 20 gallons of storage for $60
:)

Are CARB cans the only ones you can refill in Kalifornia or can you also refill the traditional cans that don't spill fuel all over the floor and yourself?

CARB cans are a JOKE! I have two cans, one as pictured and one, non-CARB compliant and the spout for the CARB can is NEVER used to empty the can, it's simply a glorified lid, the other spout is the one that gets used ALL THE TIME on BOTH cans.

there's no restriction on what you can own in Cali. The only issue is that one cannot purchase a non-CARB fuel can in-state.

I have a couple pre-CARB cans (NATO style) that were purchased a couple years ago. I fill them all the time. Not a problem.

If someone were so inclined...they could simply travel to OR, AZ, or NV and purchase a non-CARB can :meh:

To compare the consumer to the MFC in both quality and function is a little deceiving. Just about everything on them is different. The MFC has a vent originating at the cap and extanding inside to the back of the can, allowing super quick fluid transfer. The plastic on the MFC is much thicker and the spouts available for the MFC are leaps and bounds ahead of the consumer can. Not to burst your bubble, if the consumer Scepter does the trick for your needs, awesome but it really shouldn't be compared with the MFC on anything but name :D

They are hard to get, so I had to buy my stash in bulk

help me out here guys,, i own the metal NATO cans, i like them but rarely need to use them, so i dont know much about these plastic ones,, why are these plastic milspec cans so popular?

You can bang them around a bunch and they don't leak or dent. Generally they can survive being tossed off a military cargo truck. They are specked so a bunch of them can be put on an airlift pallet and air dropped and have greater than 75% survival rate. They also can be driven over. To put it simply they are marine tough.

Hey Kurt, do you have a stash of, or a source for, the mil spec spouts as well?
Can't seem to find a spout for mine.

Let me see where I'm at on them. I did a special order of them for a handful of local customers, we ordered ~20 and what didn't get snagged up locally I put on ExPo. I'm pretty sure they are all spoken for but if some become available I'll let you know.

Kurt, you aren't selling those, are you?

No, just hoarding :D I did have a few for sell but they are all gone.

Case study: White Rim Trail, Moab Utah. I'm doing mock speeds through the trail hot on the tail of dmc (Dave Connors). The tailgate on my Tacoma must have unlatched, allowing 2 Scepter MFC's and 2 MWC's to fall out from under their strap and off the trail. I didn't notice for a few minutes to I had to quickly retrace my steps to where I last knew they were there. A few miles down the road were my cans, scattered across the side of the trail, some having bounced down the hillside. Not a drop spilled. Not a doubt in my mind that a metal can would have ruptured or at least dented badly.

The truth is I really like the Wedco cans too and if I hadn't already invested in a pretty substantial fleet of Scepter cans, spouts and spares, I would surely consider them too. I don't think they are 'as good' as the Scepter, but given the availability and price I think they are right up there. Note, its my understanding that all new Wedco's in the states are CARB compliant and no longer quite the unit they were in the past.

thats good info,,, i dont plan i throwing mine around, but i recon kurt didnt either, it just happens.

ok, a little off topic :

i dont have wedco or whatever aftermarket NATO cans are these days. i'm sorta a WWII buff and have alot of war stuff. my fuel cans are original german fuel cans from back in the day, most guys would ask me what they were before they started to get popular. they've been great leak free cans but they can dent if dropped hard enough. i dont use them as much as some of you guys so i never really looked at replacements or something that might be better. i also had a water cooler, it was way cool with o.d. green steel outside, stainless inside and a cast aluminum spout, somebody wanted it more than me though as it was taken from my rig one day. really ticks me off cause i cant find another one, even through the WWII collector arena, it was a rare bird.

sorry for the hijack

Damn, I miss too much cool stuff.
Need to make more time for the forums.

Oh well, keep me posted, or if you find a spout source let me know.

I'm not to worried about finding a spout. I'd just like to get 8 or so of the fuel cans. I'll use a super siphon for fuel transfer if needed.

FWIW, the Wedco/Nato-style cans should be available through Briggs and Stratton dealers too (but not as cheap).

I got a couple "B&S" cans at Cambodian Tire when they carried them. Keep meaning to pick up a couple more from a lawnmower shop.

I just ordered some Scepter 20L H2O cans from this Canadian site. They also carry Diesel and Fuel cans. The H2O cans are $35.00 and both 20L OD Diesel's and 20L OD Gas are $60.00. The 20L Tan Diesels are $64.00.

I figure I used them in the Marine Corps and they almost last forever if taken care so for me that justifies their high price. I have a total of 6 of these cans.

If you get DS Tactical to ship to the US, go buy a lottery ticket :D

Many have been trying since the first of the year (when the ban went active) and while a few were able to score at first, I think they've put the skids on that for at least 6 months.
