I have been scratching my head on this:bang:. My 4runner transmission is making some noise. It's making a noise like rocks grinding around inside only when i am in 4th and 5th. It is not apparent under load but when i let off it is super loud. It also does it in neutral at higher speeds and goes away when i go slower. I though it was in the transmission so i rebuilt it. It did nothing. Same noise. The Clutch and throw out bearing is new also. Could it be in the transfer case? Any help would be much appreciated because I'm scratching my head on this one.

Thanks,
Scott

Did u go through the transfer ucase as well when u rebuilt the transmission?

What rebuild kit did u use and what was replaced?

No I didn't do the transfer case. I should have. I used the marlin crawler kit. Replaced bearings and synchros

mine had that and it was the rear output shaft on the transfer case, and like WarDamnEagle the first time i checked it it was in gear and no play, it did not take long till it was leaking a bit, and in gear or not had quite a bit of play.

While you were rebuilding did you check all the gears for damage. My 5th gear went on me a few years back, and when the shop got inside it had several damaged teeth. So I got a new 5th gear set and a full rebuild which took care of the problem.

It seems that if it only does it in certain gears I would lean more toward trans than T-case. If it was T-case wouldn't it exhibit in all gears?

If the grinding is happening in 4th, it can't be in the gears of tranny, as this is "straight-thru", 1:1 ratio, no gears in play.

i had an 87 that i went through some deep water, i did not think it was deep enough to get into the tranny but it did and i did not change the gear oil, and every gear but 4th was noisy enough i could not hear the radio or the loud off road tires. so i will agree with kLF.

oh and now if i go through water i change all the gear oil diffs trans and transfer!

 I forgot about that.

So I pulled the drive shaft today and ran my truck through the gears and the noise is definitely coming from the transfer case. Time to get a marlin setup. Thanks all for the help
