a daily beater for trash hauling duties on the island?

ranger or s10

cheap, relaible, easy to manuver, parts can be found easy everywhere
I thought about an Isuzu truck or a mighty max or mazda b series but I also kinda want somthing I can go get sheets of plywood with off the island from lowes in KDH. you can find some cheep rangers though... I have been seeing them in my search. The diesel truck I mentioned earlier the guy ghosted me when I asked about the title and said I would buy it if the title could be transfered.

My favorite though was another truck I was looking at buying I messaged the guy and asked how reliable it had been. He said "IDK dude, I am 15" to witch I said Ill pass. Looked like an OK truck but the vibe was off for sure.

Simplify even more and get a small trailer.

The little 5x8 ones are cheap and light and have no engine to maintain. They do suck backing up though but with a short wheel base like a 40 it's a bit better.

isuzu is just an s10
newer B series are just rangers

and they are rarer, have slight annoying nuances, and could pose body panel issues / swapablity

ranger or s10 or a v6, 5 speed, 2002 F150

simplify your life! more time for 40 work.
Nahhh No simple things for me haha! I do like having time for my 40 but also Kinda want somthing else to tinker with time to time. Maybe not an engine swap though haha. I like the older mazda b series trucks. But not really that body style when it was just a ford ranger. I like those early 80s trucks When the mazda was the original and the ford currier was the rebadge. I have a soft spot for the late 80s early 90s japanese 4x4s I learned to drive on a 1989 montero that my grandfather had. (would love to find a 5speed one of those now for a decent price). The isuzu trucks with the diesel 4cy would be a cool one that I would not mind having.

All that being said you are right these newer trucks would be better.

Ill find somthing eventually. hell a 2wd t100 regular cab would be great if I could find one for the right price. Or even an 80s toyota truck with the longer bed. witch do pop up and I have been off and on looking for.

I delevered kayaks a few times with the fj40 over the summer with a little trailer. It was not bad. Just not my favorite.

I’ve owned 2 Isuzu P’up 4wd pickups. Great little rigs, tough as nails…easy to work on. One I beat the crap out of when I was 16-18 then the other I had about 8 years ago. Was bought by the city and drug baseball fields the last few years before I bought it. Even Middle East cruisers had less dirt/dust/fesh fesh in them 😂

I currently have a 1988 dodge D50 aka Mitsubishi mighty max that needs some work but has been a great truck. Needs an alternator and new carb. If you were closer I’d be tempted to make you a deal on it 😂

This was a couple years ago.

Yeah if you were closer I would be tempted for the dodge d50. I really like the mightymax trucks. Every once in a while you find somthing similar here. Not the same thing at all but My first car in hs actually was a 1994 dodge ram 2500 with the v10, was incredibly terrible on gas for a car of its era. I still swear in 4low on the beach I could see the gas needle move downward. I think some how we had talked about isuzu trucks tangentially with @theglobb He had a clean looking one for a while.

Dang! I am heading out of town on the 26th through the 29th! for my wifes sisters wedding.... but Hopfully Ill be back in time to meet up and chat Sunday. The 40 will be in the front yard though! I am sure you will see it driving around town. you are more than welcome to check it out. I was wondering about that I figured Id run into you if you made it down.

Thermostat checked out. I did test it. it opened up in boiling water. I think the radiator cap was not seating correctly or somthing even thought the cap looks fine. I replaced the cap though. Maybe a blockage. @Greyscale for sure was on to something with that cap as it was the only thing I could not definitively say was not the problem. I am going to keep an eye on it these next few days. I did buy a cheep burp funnel from slamazon and no bubbles coming up after I burped it. Defiantly a curse from the rubber duck!

Next goal maybe this weekend is the valve seals. If it does not rain.
We catch the ferry back to Cedar Island on the Monday at 7:30 am. Where is your recently purchased house? I will definitely take a look at the Salt Wagon.

We will be staying at the Crews Inn on back road. I will send you a PM with my info so we can try to touch base on the Sunday

I will keep my fingers crossed that the cooling problem is resolved. Good luck with the oil seals, hope the weather holds out for you. Remember to plug all the holes where the keepers can fall, use a magnet to take them
Off, and rotate the crank to TDC so the valves can’t fall into the cylinder

A m416 trailer looks great behind an FJ40, just saying.

My local craigslist has a '66 C20, patina, bed/trailer for $550, sitting on mud-type bias-plys. That would look awesome hauling, for work, or recreation. No tailgate. Actually, tailgates aren't all that, especially if you have welding skills, and you want a spare tire carrier.

On my truck I'm tempted to build bows, and a custom canvass top, as loads are required to be covered at our transfer-station, and my pickup only has four hooks, and I'm afraid of the day that a bungee cord lets go, either for me or the rear glass. Plus a canvass cover means that I could carry a mountain bike, and not advertize it in parking lots or wherever. Think lowish bows. I installed a Delta steel toolbox because there is no room in the cab.

Don’t tell anybody but I’m working on this late 70’s Datsun trailer

Sounds like you need a Toyota Stout.

Just sayin....

😂
Good luck finding one. I’ve only seen one in person at the Toyota plant in San Antonio.

I would love to do some sort of resto mod 4x4 stout. I would not want it to look unfactory though. flip side is its so rare that I would hate to do that. I would just love a 2wd one for what it is.

This one has been for sale for a while. too far from me to buy though.

The Stout, it doesn't carry plywood?
For years, I'd go by a certain route thru the neighborhood to see about a '66 F100, and thought, wow, that is some awesome sheet metal.
When I worked as a machinist at the University, I had the chance to drive a 4wd. Chevy or GMC - for going up to the astronomy observatory in the mountains, about a couple hours away. It had an SM465 in it, and I had just installed an SM420 to replace my 3-speed. I loved hearing that granny gear on my way to do trash runs, even though second-gear is basically first, and thought this is basically a Cruiser with a different transfercase.

I have no idea on the size of the stout. I have never seen one in person. I thought it was a bigger truck than the later hilux. I love how they look though. I would have a bunch of old trucks if I could. The 1967 - 72 c/k10 trucks I have a soft spot for. I also love the f100s from about the same time frame. even the dodge trucks from the mid and late 1960s are beautiful in my opinion.

I think they’re smaller than Tacomas.

We got more engine torn down today with my hs class! we pulled the heads on the SBC. I was supprised not to see much of a ridge in the uper part of the cylenders. Additionally this engine sat outside for a week and I know it got rained on. I did have a tarp but it blew off in the storm. Looked like water got into one cylinder. I had dumped a bunch of marvel in it before I brought it to the school.

The cylinder below is the one that water got in. and its only suspect in the bottom corner. Most of it I cant feel.
The upside is I cant find any indication that this engine has ever been rebuilt.

Also Remember when I was looking for a temp sensor for the 2f and older gage in the fj40....
This was in the side of the SBC. I am wondering if the union gizmo is the same one I had to buy from a certain online land cruiser parts dealer that cost me 80$ The temp sensor looks Identical to a 1f sensor.
