Just wanted to post what I have experienced in the last couple of weeks. About 6 weeks ago I started running again after (well lets just say a very long time). I have been riding my mountain bike regularly for 3 years 2-3 times a week. While climbing has become easier with the more climbing you do. I noticed that after running for 6 weeks my climbing was even better. Meaning, less burn, easier breathing, and actually no cussing while I am going up :) So this may not be a secret to all but cross training has def helped.

Happy Trails

I had a similar improvement when I used to run the bleachers at the University of Texas football stadium for 45 minutes, three days a week during winters. Then again, I never met a climb I didn't like...

Spinning was my game changer. Prior to spinning, while in my mid 40's, I was your standard weekend warrior. Spring season, age 45, I was woefully out of shape, even though the prior season, I was spanking the trails. I started a swimming regimen to get back my leg strength, and went to the gym to spin a bit. BLAMMO, within 5 lessons, I was much stronger on the bike, especially uphill.

Now 4 years later, I spin 3x weekly out of season, and 1x weekly during bike season. I ride as hard as I spin, devour (East coast) hills, and don't have to stop at the summit of any ride. I just bang out a 2 hr ride 3x weekly nearly effortlessly.

I owe that all to spinning. Oh yeah, dropped 35-40 pounds, too. Knock wood, the weight has stayed off.

Spinning reminds me of XC running. Full tilt speed 'til the race is over.

rave, thanks for the input and good for you keeping off the weight. I have not tried spinning yet. I try to ride even when it gets cold out. I prefer to be outside so like a treadmill I think spinning would not be my cup of tea but I will give it a try. Maybe I will get one of those trainers for my mtn bike.

I'l ride until the temps reach 30* F or there's snow and ice on the trails. Off season, the spinning is a Mon, Wed., Sat. commitment, but well worth it for remaining/staying in shape for spring season.

Outside training is fine, but spinning gets you in prime form very quickly. That and you get to hear loud, pumping techno and watch the wimmens. ;)

I like me some wimmens :)
