Hello all,

have the trans pan off my A442F to change the 1-2 solenoid and it never occurred to me that the part I bought might be used in two places. I figured worst case it'd be in the A442F FSM but while they show the solenoids and how to troubleshoot it never says which is which.

So.. does anyone know for sure which solenoid is the #1?

Thanks

Ended up using a multimeter with the circuit at the TCU to figure it out. There are four noids across the front edge of the trans pan. #1 is second from the driver's side.

It is already buttoned up. I planned on taking photos but had to get it back together in time for an appointment today.

That said.. you want photos of the new solenoid? it was similar but not the same, stamped AISIN on the mounting tab.. NOT oem. I ordered it from Cobra transmission supply IIRC.

Waiting for the RTV to set up.. plan is to fill it up with fluid and drive to work tomorrow. Will post with results.

Sure, post up photos of the new and old solenoids side by side. Could you describe the symptoms you were getting and how that indicated to you which solenoid was the culprit?

Ah.. Yeah, I wasn't clear. The new one is already installed and closed up. I can get a pic of the old one but I don't know how much use that would be.

Originally I thought I had wiring issues with my body swap, since the transmission issues started just after. I slowly realised it sounded more like a solenoid though.

Basically if the truck had been sitting, put the shifter in Drive and the truck would Rev fine but slowly pull away as though it wasn't in first. Maybe 3rd or OD. Run the shifter all the way down to L and it'd catch first just fine.. Then shift to D once it was rolling and it'd act normal (including first) at all kinds of stop lights and conditions... Until you let the truck sit in P or N for a while. Then it'd act up again.

I'll have to try to find and post a link tomorrow but I found a troubleshooting graph on this site that shows what conditions your find in each gear depending on which solenoid is malfunctioning.

I've been having the same issue for a good long while now. Figured it was the 1-2 solenoid so I went to toyota to order it and dude shows me a diagram of the solenoids and asks which one it is in the pic. I was like...the first second solenoid. He didn't find that helpful and rough cost was somewhere around $189 each so I decided to hold off. thanks for getting under there and figuring out which one it was.

Don't get too convinced.. first time I started the truck after the repair the problem was gone.

Second time? it's back. No change from before the repair.

This is the chart I mentioned.. trying to use the same attachment from another thread. if it doesn't work I'll figure out another way.

Yeah, that's what I paid.

This is from baldilocks via PM:

"As you may know, the A442 is apparently the same thing as an AW450-43le, a truck transmission produced out of the union between Aisin-Warner. You can purchase solenoids that are listed for the AW450 for under $50 each at cobratransmission.com. I did not buy from them because, when I called the rep could find no cross reference to the A442 even though a buddy of mine has actually bought the shift solenoids from them and used them in his A442. Since I was able I get a full set of all 4 good, used ones for $100 I went that route. Cobra is not the only place to find these but they are the cheapest I found.

Shift 1 and 2- D49422A
Lockup- D49425A
Timing- D49421A

That's the place I used. Bolted in, was an Aisin part.. but at this point I'll have to assume that wasn't my real problem.

Considering the extensive custom wiring I had to do to make the body swap work I'll need to look into that a little deeper.

Yeah, my rig doesnt have extensive wiring to make anything work and it often times starts off in 2nd or is stuck between. Usually shifting from D to reverse and down to L and then back to D corrects it.

one of my trucks does the same thing. i have just dealt with it for about 50K miles. not worth the trouble of figuring it out since i have too many other projects.

It just seems very coincidental that it would start doing this exactly when I get it on the road after the body swap.

Granted, it did sit for about 5 months without running in the meantime.

I did initially have problems with the round shift position indicator connector above the starter.. somehow got water in it. After the swap multiple dash gear lights would come on at the same time.. cleaned the connector and installed dielectric grease.. fixed the lights but I wonder if maybe something is going on with the signal to the TCU.

Did you ever figure

did you ever figure this out?

Im looking at a 1993 at a mechanics shop, it looks good but also like s*** (like interior is dismantled and there’s a little plant growing in the drivers side floor pan, algae on the outside, but otherwise looks like a mint 212k). However he says it runs like a sewing a machine EXCEPT for this very same problem, which he says is because of a shift solenoid that he couldn’t find to replace.

It has been too long, I don’t remember. Ended up swapping in a v8 and associated transmission, and am not sure what the timeframe was for that vs the a442 issues.

Just replace all 4. Use the Isuzu solenoids. $40 for all 4. 8-97202074-0, 8-97202073-0, 8-97202072-0 (x2)

8-97202074-0 = timing
8-97202073-0 = lockup
8-97202072-0 = shift 1 & 2

Got a link? I tried looking up the part numbers but couldnt find anything
