So what we started with, a 1992 toyota pickup with a locked up 22RE, which became a great platform for the intentions of the project. Where we were headed, 1KZ-TE/5 Speed manual swap. I started out on the project helping a friend of mine who had actually purchased the truck and drivetrain already, I was there to lend a hand in the dismantling and offer a second opinion on various aspects of the project. I will continue with a more in depth write-up when time allows but here's a few pictures to get started with.

Howdy! So is that engine bay the donor or the new recipient? I'm interested in this for my 85. I drive it like a diesel anyway(shift up before 2500 rpm) on my 22Re. Overall cost for swap and drivabliity when done? What's that green and white thing rooting around in the background? John
 
Engine bay is from the completed conversion. Trucks been done for about a year now, I would have to go back through some of the costs I am aware of, say this because as you can probably see the truck went through practically a full restore, new interior, new OEM bed, paint, wheels and tires, suspension, etc.

I see you kept the 4WD ECU. If you want to get a T-case knob with the 4WD button on the left side (facing the driver) I'm sure I could round up the number for you. I like the RHD shift levers myself, as they look cool. Annoying though when you are driving with someone who just doesn't get that they are closer to the passengers legs than normal, eh?

Did this start as a half-cut, or a simple engine/transmission combo with the other bits sourced separately?

Viton fuel lines, or standard rubber?

Did you swap the harness on the engine, or under the dash? More precisely: which harness did you modify--the vehicle or the engine harness?

That looks awesome. I think I might need to get myself one of those Hilux badges.

Pics of the progress are coming, I just haven't had time to get all that together and posted up yet. Project was a half-cut, Michael Hooper was able to help make that happen. Standard lines right now, I am looking to eventually swap over to viton lines. This go round we actually removed the engine harness and dash harness only to find out that only the engine harness needs to be addressed, the engine harness was the modified harness. I have spent some time helping a buddy complete this same swap (well his is an auto) on a 4runner and it's nearing completion. Went a little smoother with some of the things we learned in converting this one.

What diesel mileage are you getting?

The green and white thingy looks like an Iron Pig but I'm not the best at identifying older toys yet.
 
I am halfway thinking about a diesel swap into my 85 too! It is currently a 22r, that has been bored out, huge carb, headers, cam, "head work" etc. What I would prefer is something dead simple that starts super easy and reliable. I am thinking OBX trips!? I don't want to be the guy broke down on the way to / from or during and it would be nice to drive there and back instead of tow rig.

I suppose a 22RE would be "easier" but if I am going to bother with a whole engine swap anyway.... Been lurking around here trying to see what parts I would have to have, mine is a G52 tranny and I think the smaller / older diesels need a W56 behind em.

Drivetrain costs weree around $4,200 and the wiring harness work was around $400, incidentals were about another $600...

Now, as long as someone is bumping this thread, I have a question about the drivetrain.

To this day, I am still wonderng about the whole 4wd button on the transfer case shifter, as the trans is likely the 5 speed, manual, and the case should also (?) be a manual?

Switched ADD system instead of a vacuum operated one? Didn't have a knob and used that for decoration? What?

*For that matter, IIRC the factory skid plates differed from the diesels to the gassers as the diesel has the finned provision with a bit more face to them for the factory steering fluid cooler??

The 4WD button is for the 4WD itself. The t-case lever is a manual high/low selector, and it has an electrically shifted 2/4WD selector. The button simply requests that the 4WD ECU command the actual 4WD shifter to actuate. The ECU will inhibit 4WD for certain conditions (vehicle moving, front diff temp hi, etc...). When you select low range, the ECU automatically engages 4WD as well. I have the same system from my surf. Not a fan. I don't like having to come to a complete stop to "shift" into 4WD. It means I end up in 4WD a lot more than I need, because I can't just slip it into 4WD a few seconds before I might actually need it. For instance: last might I drove about 20 miles on mostly dry roads in 4WD just because I didn't know where the snow and ice actually started. There's so little weight in the back of my truck that it is hard to drive on slick roads in 2WD, and the diesel has so much
more power and torque that it's much harder than originally. The end result is that I chicken out and engage 4WD a lot more than I need.

The skid plate on my surf was a plastic or fiberglass piece. I don't remember it being louvered for the PS cooler, but then on a RHD truck the pump is on the left and the PS gearbox is on the right, so it might cool enough that way.

Hope that answers some questions. Someday I'll probably replace my T-case with a normal one simply so I can shift whole moving.
