Who else has rotated battery position to keep the positive protected deeper under the hood?

The positive battery post originally came with a red rubber protective cover to help prevent it from making contact with metal ie: in an accident or from tools laid across the top touching both posts. As already mentioned above the positive battery post should be on your left and rearward when facing the battery (looking into the engine bay from the front).

Here's a couple of photos showing the correct size (Toyota) Type 27F battery in a FZJ80 (photo from the Land Cruiser Heritage Museum)

Another photo showing a 24F battery with the original type battery post clamps.

Both the 27F and 24F battery types have the positive battery post on the rear of the battery (Positive Left, Negative Right from this perspective)

One more from the rear looking forward showing the positive battery post with original type clamp along with the fusible link bundle (3 fusible wires) and the AM1 junction box in their original positions:

Pretty sure most or all modern Toyotas have positive inboard and rearward from the factory

Toyota and nearly all manufacturers design battery tray positioning with the positive inboard of the guard to protect against side impact shorting of the +ve terminal against the inner guard. Hence the 'L' spec batteries used
if yours has the positive close to the guard then its not per spec
