Rolling the dice on this fridge 63QQT $270 shipped

I've searched the interweb from top to bottom twice looking for that mod but it's only mentioned once in the last page or two of that expi thread. Guess the first thing I'm gonna do when I get it is take it apart!

Phil is your status still on back order?

went to have a look at mine. (but not taken anything apart yet)
Looks like it's only 3 screws to remove the metal panel that covers/is attached to the LCD. If the LCD comes out with it it should be trivial to put some insulation in the back.

Well, let us know if you find anything interesting in there, e9999. Not heard of any issues.

The open box side of compact appliance is where our 43 liter unit came from. Note that you need to keep checking back on that site if you want one. They post them as they become available, they often don't last very long as folks keep grabbing them faster than say, a humidfier or whatever else they sell. That's a good deal for a honking big chest.

Works great, never an issue, except the handle that broke right off and replaced under warranty. It rides in the back of the truck all the time and always powers right up and chills great when needed. Coolest accessory you can get and don't be afraid of getting a good deal, they're a real steal and the real deal.

For an insulating jacket, I got one of those aluminized insulated front window blinds, sliced and velcroed and taped it up. It's held up well. Sits in a drawer, held down by turnbuckles. Note the way I did it left the back end where the vents and motor are uncovered. No need to insulate there, as it would trap motor heat. I repurposed the strap that came with the blind to help hold it down. Some strategic cuts and these pics should guide you if you want to chop a blind, too.

86qt $278 http://www.compactappliance.com/FP8...cgid=Clearance_Items-Open_Box&mtcpromotion=cj

the one I got
http://www.openboxdirect.com/on/dem...SD&cgid=Appliances-Scratch_and_Dent&bisn=true

and the 80qt $343 http://www.openboxdirect.com/on/dem...pliances-Scratch_and_Dent&bisn=true&bisn=true

In order to get mine I checked the links 4 times a day some days when I remembered, it took about 4 months from the time I learned of the Edgestar on expi portal to find availability and the first time I took to long checking out and it was already gone. If you're persistent and don't give up you'll eventually find one of these in stock. I did the email when back in stock and to this day have NEVER got an email so don't depend on that to alert you!

LOL
I knew you'd get a kick out of that!

Fridge arrived as promised on 12.24
After opening the shipping box the first thing I noticed was RA# Defective written on the fridge box in several places. My experience with refurbished electronics has been excellent. My thoughts are when something is refurbished the tech checks to make sure everything is working within spec and properly. Time will be the final judge on that.

Plugged the fridge in and up pops a FF code:eek: No manual was in the box.:frown: A google search put me on THIS<link Edgestar site and I DL the manual. The site has lots of info along with several video on operation and advanced repairs. Reading the manual I see FF just means its in fast freeze mode. The fridge has been plugged and running since it arrived and working fine.

I have adjusted the temp up and down, plugged in both 12 & 110, turned the unit off and on several times. So far so good:hillbilly:

My other fridge has benefited from an insulating blanket but I was not able to locate one on line for the Edgestar.:frown: So out came the bubble insulation and duct tape. A couple hours later I have an insulating blanket.(Red/Green would be proud) Not 100% sure if Im going to make a top or not but for now its better then it was.

Still not clear on the LCD mod I keep hearing about  anyone??

Watching the videos doesnt look like a lot can go wrong and if it does it looks easy enough to repair. It does have a small dent in the lower corner but the blanky covers it so :meh: I like the price and size and I hope to be one of the guys with good things to say down the road.

Thanks again for posting the link.

GD YOU PHIL, that was supposed to be my fridge!!!!

I called today and since my ship to address (my work) was diff than my bill to my order got held up and you got the only one in stock.....SOB!

Good news is the CS rep was super nice and understanding, they're doing inventory this weekend and she said that if the 86Q was in stock she'd let me have it at the same price or I'll just have to wait it out until one is in stock.

Anyhow Phil Merry Xmas you lucky effer!

Score one for LCPhil:beer:
Yeah, I though the double FF meant some sort of failure. Then I, too, read the manual.

Condolences to warezdog:crybaby:
Hoping they find you another 63 soon.:hhmm:

One thing that I did change on ours was the cord and plug. I modded the cord to be long enough to plug into the receptacle I installed in the side of the cargo area using a Marinco locking plug and receptacle and still reach when the drawer was all the way out. Once I got things to lay happy, she stays plugged in all the time. I installed a hooded switch next to the plug, so all I need do is flip it to turn things on, since the fridge doesn't have a power switch.

Could have done a neater job on my hacking at the plastic, but it works fine. I didn't want the plug sticking out from the side, where it could be snagged by cargo or when we sleep in back of the truck, so I went with a cubby hole. The box behind is just a plastic electrical box of appropriate size that I found at the big box.

On the topic of refurbished units. In my experience the techs that work on refurbishing electronics generally are a cut above the techs that work on the production line. They are usually the guys that do repairs etc. and they need to know how to trouble shoot. They also know what the common mode field failures are and will take an extra minute to look at anything that might be an issue later. Raises/promotions are usually tied to return rates so they want anything they work on to never come back. I never have a problem buying anything re-furbed.

I agree, the canon DSLR I bought refurbished 5 years ago only had 600 shutter actuations on it and looked new, Canon's refurb site saved me HUGE on this camera, all said and done under $300 to my door for at the time a $900 camera. I used a old canon broken film SLR off ebay for $5 to save another 20% on the refurb price.

On another note customer service called me this morning and said they had one for me, shipping today!
Talk about following up, being prompt and polite, sheesh I can't say enough good things about openboxdirect. Honestly I never expected a call back and after seeing the charge on my card drop off at Friday midnight I figured it was a done deal and I'd just have to keep looking for them to come back stock.

She told me that this one had a very small dent and that you couldn't tell unless the light was just right.

So all said and done this company IMHO went well above and beyond the call of duty for paltry $270!

Did you score the 86Q also?

You know I didn't even ask, of Friday I told her that I would take any edgestar they had at that price. My order now shows in warehouse but I haven't got any shipping confirmation and the order still says 63QT

Do you remember what the weight on yours was when you got the ship notification? This way I'll have an idea of what I'm getting when I do get the ship notification!

Weight 57 lbs
Total pieces 1
Service FedEx Home Delivery
Dimensions 30x27x22 in.

Got the fedex notification, 57lbs so it must be the 63, should have it by Friday with any luck.

Well I ordered the43qt one Monday. Checked on Tuesday and Wednesday and order says that it's back ordered :-(. Get a call today saying that the fridge didn't pass muster on the final check, so they had to cancel the order.. Damn so close to having one! I hope they have more soon.
