Really, really this should be taken to the Roadbikereview.com forums.

Yeah, my bike has 130mm rear spacing. Anyone still using downtube shifters? I am going to be using Dura Ace 10speed down tube shifters for my upgrade. I like them for some reason, those brifter things are goofy. Thanks for all the help guys. I will check out all your suggestions.

Now this I would seriously reconsider. I don't know if you do any racing but down tube shifters would be a huge handicap. STI shifting offers increased saftey as well as the ability to shift and brake at the same time. Money would be better spent on Ultegra or 105 STI shifters than Dura ace downtube shifters.

In cruiser terms, what you plan to do is like installing a set of ARB lockers and activating them by blowing into a straw. OK, rant off.

I was seriously thinking, and almost bought some 105 STI shifters, about them but after reading all the reviews on the road bike forum, they sound like crap. Most of the posts was about them breaking after a year! I just cant justify spending that kind of money for something that is going to break in a year. Plus, the downtube shifters are only going to be like $20.

This is why both my road and cyclocross bikes are Campy equiped.

Is your bike currently equiped with down tube shifters? $20.00 is not much to burn on new ones, then get STI later.

I would not put too much credit into reviews online. My shop connections have not seen a 105 STI 10 speed shifter failure yet. My 14 years of shop experience taught me many things. One of which is that only tri-riders are bigger techno winnies that road riders. (no offense to you or anyone else) When in reality only a handful can really tell the difference between 105 and Dura Ace from the saddle.

The 105 shifters are very reliable. Generally the biggest gripe is they tend to rattle more than ultegra.

Now this I believe. 9 speed did the same. That was nearing the end of my shop days. We had to use some double sided tape to get them to stop. They always worked properly but drove some people nuts with a rattle.

Cool, thanks for the info. You guys have convinced me. Yes, my bike already has downtube shifters. I think I will get some STI shifters then. :)

105 is great if you buying a complete bike and it's the component package. If you buying parts individually or upgrading ultegra in never that much more and personally I don't think 105 is worth it (individually). wholsale between the 2 used to be only a couple dollars. Last wholesale book is a couple years old though but I suspect this hasn't changed.

ie performance this month.
sti 105 $299
sti ultegra $269

Also see what you LDB can do for you before you go to the above.... ;)

If their free, I want them!!!!!

I hope the bontrager x lite and xxlite have gotten much better. Personally of the madone's i've built i've been less than impressed with the quality of the bontrager wheels, Esp on a 5-10k bike. Also I'm a little disappointed at some of the stuff trek has pumped out an put Keith's name on considering his contribution to the mtb industry. Oh well he's gettin paid ;)
