Stupid question here. If brake lines are not leaking why would you replace them? I am considering it but was also thinking of retro into 10mm format for disk brake conversion in the future. Does this make sense?

Because they are FORTY YEARS OLD and your life depends on them!

Wanna see what happens when a line fails? Check out LCJ's thread in the 45 forum.

Your won't reuse the early front drop hoses [9 or 10mm] when you do the disc conversion anyways [they use a single, centered drop], so adapter fittings are a moot point.

Best

The biggest problem with changing from 9mm to 10mm none of your wheel cylinders ,''T'' fittings, and drop hoses, will Not be reusable or you will have to use adapters or use all 10mm stuff.
Going to 10mm and 4 wheel Disc brakes at the same time make sense, Most people that go this wrought want a brake booster, then you are looking at the fire wall rib and the carburetor issue, some have used a firewall spacer. Then again I would Use all new parts too.

Degnol, used Corvette Disc brakes M/C with 4 wheel Disc, this is what I might have used, If I went that route.

Mark A of marks off Road uses a later style 10mm duel master cylinder to split front and rear drum brakes by using compression line fittings to couple back onto the 9mm line and welds over the "T"( I may go this way later ):hhmm:

There are Many ways to deal with brakes in the FJs in the end I went with the Original OEM Design.

I went and rebuilt the OEM single circuit Master and drum brakes,Using 95% new parts including new brake lines. Now I have a original Toyota design brake system and It works just like Mr. Toyota Designed It.

Then sold my DB front Axle and other 4 wheel DB parts. Call me Crazy :grinpimp:

Is It Old School yes It Is ! Is It Safe I think So. as long as you inspect It and make adjustments 9mm works just fine.

My FJ40 is not my daily driver I wish It was,so If something not working right I don't drive It.
and I have anouther 4X4 If needed

Is It $$$ to rebuild your braking system Yes It is !
I would not re-use junkyard brake parts for a rig that is driven on the streets.

I have Re-learned how to adjust drum brakes again now I can adjust all 4 in about 30-40 minutes

I am very happy with the results....Joe C

Dusty 66 thanks for sharing this info on your journey of hunting parts and info from other knowledgeable individuals.Great attention to detail.....your are totally on a different level.

Because I want to drive my FJ40 next year I am skipping on doing a disk brake conversion. But I plan to replace all the brake lines now, just will do it with 9mm lines instead of tring to plan ahead with 10mm lines. Also since the fj is stripped down to the frame, it is easy to replace now. What about buying lines vs. making my own? Is is ok to reuse old fittings?

Yes You can, do that Mark @ Marks Off Road Home Page has re-condition the fittings,

My original Brake hard lines with less than (40,000) miles were in great condition I was having most of my problems at the fittings.

My self Lacking the skills  I tried to recondition the fittings but had little success.
another option is buying new fittings from Classic tube and making your own.

I would defiantly buy new OEM hoses from Mark or After-market steel lines from Downey

Good Luck
