I am considering the purchase of a truck with 205K and wonder when the timing chains typically need to be replaced.? Also on a previous truck I owned, an 82 22R engine the chain failed at 80K and required removing the head to replace it. and was expensive.

Timing chain, water pump. I personally say go with Engnbldr. I've loved there's. Check all the hoses. Depending on how you do it oil pan gasket and head gasket. Valve cover. Do a valve adjustment while in there. Might as well get new radiator fluid in there if its old.

I don't know if I must remove the head to change the Timing chain. As some engines you just remove the timing cover and it is accessible. I agree that the other stuff should be done while its open. the cooling system has been recently replaced along with the alternater. but I am not sure about the Timing chain.

You don't have to pull the head. I did it with lower the oil pan. But you have yo be careful putting the cover back on as it can mess up the head as the timing cover sits on the underside of it.

Thanks. that helps. engnbldr. is a good resource. Their price for an 84 22R kit is $58.00 which would be awesome. I queried them as a double check. But have not gotten a reply as yet. merry Xmas.

What did you ask them about? I've had to deal with them as I got a bad water pump. Got my new one the next day in the mail. Great company, awesome customer service. Who I'm going with when I do the timing chain. and water pump on my '84

I want to make sure the 22R timing chain kit I saw listed was the same as the 22RE. Also I will want to know what all is included. At this point I have not yet bought the truck. and I don't Know if it needs it. But at 205K, it is a concern. Also I will be needing some parts for the LC and These folks may be my best bet.

There's a section for up yo 84 that has the timing chain listed. Its metal backed and comes with everything you'll need. I don't remember it all but I didn't have to buy any parts.

If it's a 22RE (fuel injected) then it either is later than '84 or not the original engine. Prior to 8/84, they only had the 22R with a carb. The block height also changed then so you must get the correct chain kit for your engine.

Earlier engine also has a gasket on the pan, and the drain plug is 19mm.

There is no recommended change interval on the timing chain. If you get a lot of valve clatter when starting it cold, then you need a new tensioner, at which point you should do the chain, sprockets, and guides.

Engnbldr sells decent stuff but I don't like their timing chain kit. The guides hit the cover and the gaskets don't fit well.

You can do a chain without pulling the head but I highly recommend dropping the pan. It will make getting the cover off and back on much easier, and you can clean out any chunks of guides that have fallen down.

My understanding is that the engine is fuel injected. so It may be a late 84?? I like the tip about checking for a timing chain rattle when cold. However I won't have the option of doing that test before I I buy. The truck is about 2 hrs. away and If I look at it during the week the owner would drive it to work and I would look at it there. He claims that it was changed about 40K ago just before he bought it. Many years ago I had an 82 with a 22r engine and the TC died at 80K. So what source do recommend for a new TC kit.
Thanks.

22RE was available in 84 but, 2WD only and based on the earlier 84 and older (tall deck) motor which used a longer chain.

22RE was available in 84 but, ...

Technically, the 22re was available in 1982, and offered through 1985 ... in the Celica.

Thanks all. I seemed to have missed out on buying that truck so it is a mute question at the moment. However I am still hoping to find a 4 cyl. fuel injected Toyota PU. preferably ext. cab. does not need to be 4wd.
