How does one go about bending new lines with no reference line? Does anybody have some good pictures of their brake lines on a stock fj62 from where they come off the frame to the axle and brakes. I have the double flare kit, bender and cutter and i know its 3/16" line with m10 x 1 fittings. When I got my cruiser PO had already replaced them pretty sloppily so I don't have a good reference to go off of.

So just the lines on red, on the axle? There are little holders and brackets for the lines to follow on the axle housing itself. Do you still have the junction "T" on the pumpkin?

I recommend getting the copper-nickle brake line. It's so much easier to manage.

Yeah, just lines in red. Good to know

I recently made my brake lines using some twisted up bailing wire as a template. Bend it where you need it to go then transfer that to the brake tubing. To make sure the bends are in the right place I made a few reference bends with a mark at 0 degrees (start of bend). So you can put you template next to your straight tubing, line up the bend with the reference bend, make a start of bend mark on the tubing and bend it. Keep the clocking of several bends in mind also. There’s probably a YouTube video on making brake lines. The plier type bender is good for small radius bends and making small adjustments to a bend, only for 3/16” tubing. The spring benders work good for large radius bends. I also recommend copper nickel tubing.

Thats clever twisting it, I was using baling wire too but it was too flimsy. Thanks for the tip. Did you have a good flare tool as well? The autozone rental has yet to yield good results and I’m getting frustrated.

It worked pretty good for making the templates. If the bend is off just straighten it back out and try again. Take a long piece and bend it in half. Chuck one end in a drill, the other end in a vice and twist it up. I have an imperial flaring tool. It’s a good one. Use a drop of oil on the tube and tool for each forming process.

After years of ruining flares with my clamp-style flaring tool, I finally bought one of these:

I've since made dozens of flawless flares and my blood pressure has largely returned to normal.

[Edit: i see that link is to a Canadian website. I'm sure the product is widely available from any number of vendors, Amazon, etc.)]

I think I’m gonna bite the bullet and learn from others mistake on this. Thanks
