Just wanted to share this with anyone else needing extra keys for their Cruiser...ours were somehow broken from the previous owner (literally the key part missing and the remote being used with a valet key. :bang:

I have a 1999 and the first time I went to the dealer for an extra key they quoted about $390 for parts and labor to program it. :o

Second trip back was during a nightmare repair from faulty work done by a different garage...I won't get in to that. But due to the $$$ I spent the manager said he would comp labor for me on the key programming. :)

Went to Part and the guy working was BRILLIANT. He said on my year they can simply take the guts out of my existing key and drop them in to another casing with key (just cut the key as needed).

Apparently on newer models you can't even do this - because there is a chip IN the metal part of the key that is associated with the security code.

Hope this saves someone else some $$$!

I have a 1999 also, and only one key with the remote in the casing. I just wanted an extra in case this one was lost or damaged. Instead of ordering the $300 remote key, the dealer ordered me a $62 key that still has to be programed because of the chip, but doesn't have the remote lock/unlock in it.

One other option the parts guy at the dealer told me people are doing is....hiding a programmed key up behind the plastic dash, really close to the key cylinder. Then the cheap $3 key's anybody can cut will start your car. Or another remote lock system installed aftermarket wouldn't need dealer programmed information to start the car, because it would be so close to the cylinder it would trick the computer system or whatever.

There might be two different systems used on 99 land cruisers too.

Thanks for the ideas. I have a key being held by hope and duct tape as we speak. Ill have to try when my key gives up the ghost. Sure beats paying $200+.

If you have a broken remote key its a snap to remove the electronics module and drop it into a new case, as the OP says. I've been using after-market cases for years, which look and last the same as the OEM but run $18 on Ebay. I literally keep one on the shelf for the next time someone wrenches the key and cracks the case. Here's an example from the same source that appears to be a Denso part - even better! Any decent locksmith will cut the key blank to match your original.

All good for 1999 model, and probably all with this style key remote key.

I also have broken remote case for a 2004 LC100. Instead of having a locksmith cut the blank key, could I take the existing transmitter AND the already cut metal key part, and put them both in a new case? Thanks

Assuming your 2004 has the same case as the one I linked above, no.
The key shaft is molded into the case for strength, and not transferable to another case. Not a big deal given that the new case key blank can be cut to match for a few bones.

Any good locksmith can cut/program new blanks for about $70/key.

I live in Africa, that won't be quite so easy. I do like your idea of using the old key just as a fob with a non-remote transponder key to do the ignition. I may end up doing that.
Or I may give these guys a go after I've worked out which exact type of key I have. They sell blank keys/cases similar to those on eBay but say they can cut the physical metal part based from a digital picture of your existing key:

Toyota remote key TOY48BT

Thanks for the link, much appreciated, I'll give them a call tomorrow and see what they can do. If that doesn't work out the UK company I linked to won't be hard for me to arrange either.
Once I have that worked out, my next step will be to try and get a second remote key, but sourcing a blank remote key with programmable transponder will be much harder I suspect.
But if I have one solid working remote I'll be happy. I have 3 other non-remote keys with transponders as backups if I lose the remote.

PS - For a new remote key with transponder the Toyota main dealer here quoted me $626 with a 4-week wait time to import from Japan (!).

I think we are losing site of the original post intent.

An original key does 3 things:
A) fits the tumbler and allows start
B) remote door locks
C) security transponder that communicates with ECU

(A) is the metal part
(B and C) are the plastic part

90% of our trouble as 100 series owners is breaking the original key because the metal end breaks away from the plastic end. That means you have seperated function A from function B and C If this is your issue, order a new key blank(A) with empty clam shell from eBay for $10. Take it to your local Walmart and have them cut the key for $.99. Then open the clam shell and put your remote/transponder(B and C) 'guts' in the new clam shell. You are good as new for $12-$15.

10% of our key trouble is that we lose our key. In that instance, you are screwed. On your way to the dealership, pick up a jar of Vaseline!

thanks for the link. I picked one up :steer:

I just purchased a "OEM" master key from eBay, it was $50 shipped. Toyota cuts keys at no cost. I gave them my VIN, cut the key and did the rain dance in the truck and programed it as a new master, and the remote part. It works great! I may order another one just to have another working master key. My first master key somehow ended up in the washing machine, the second master key somehow ended up in the hot tub...I haven't had a working remote in 3+ years.

I'd like to find a metal case replacement. Who's got a CNC machine? I'll be happy to send a case over!

That is the one I purchased off eBay. It was $50 shipped. They are popping up all over the place. Search for "Land Cruiser 100 Master Key". I purchased from the member "dairalex" and recommend him/her/them/it. I don't think it's "OEM" as the casing doesn't have the Toyota symbol on it. I also had to put some paper behind the internal fob to push the buttons up higher (felt broken, buttons sat far down in the sockets).

Got a link to that OEM eBay key? That's cheap!
