If you use actual washer fluid, it acts as a lubricant and can extend the life of the components.
Distilled water has no lubricity to it and may a partial cause for early failure.
Well, I tried that with the first two I installed. Then I read a thread about trying distilled water. The thought was that the crusty white material left behind when wiper fluid dries may cause, or contribute, to the failure. For future reads on this thread using distilled water did not prolong the life of the diverter.
