where is everyone getting their brake calipers and rotors from these days? i chunked through partsouq yesterday and there is a ton of OEM missing and they seem high. supposedly by $100 in some cases compared to some other (local) dealer OEM prices someone said they got.
also i've only done brakes on my motorcycle but i tried to do a little research on compounds.
anyway - can i buy NAPA reman calipers if someone there is taking care of me or should i go OEM? partsoux seems to be out of some OEM and then they are selling cheaper or sometimes more expensive options that come in a cardboard box with angled toyota stamps. is this as good as OEM? or just alternate vendor OEM?
finally any recommendations for rotors? i would like to spend extra on pads and rotors (or calipers too) if it is a legit improvement.
i've researched a bit and one of these is EBC yellow i think?
I’m about to throw some EBC 80 series yellows and DBA rotors on the front today. They’re replacing OEM rotors and 100 series OEM pads. @RFB what model EBCs did you use?
DP6993 6000 Series Greenstuff
EBC 7000 Series Greenstuff SUV Supreme Compound - DP7992 - FRONT
-
oh also i have speed bleeders for my calipers and LSPV from speedbleeders. anyone absolutely have problems with these in an 80 series? i am getting new calipers so they will go into clean parts.
THANKS

I just installed the EBC greenstuff in my 80.

I haven't driven it yet, but I have high hopes.

I'm a fan of OEM Toyota rotors. They're good value for the money.

I don't have any solid advice on calipers. I generally prefer original equipment Toyota, but they seem very pricy on this rig. Napa used to be a go to for the higher end Eclipse line, but they seem to have dropped that option. Original equipment remans from Toyota are inexpensive, IF you can find them in stock. You can also get rebuild kits from Toyota and rebuild your current calipers (or rebuild them for spares).

also do i need to buy this shim kit and anti-squeal as OEM parts or do they come from EBC or something?(!)
THANKS

any thoughts on other reman from NAPA? just curious. i've priced some non OEM but same vendor parts at NAPA (like a clock spring) and i swear they were 2X local counter retail (which is always like 2X online purchase price).

I just installed those same Slee lines and everything fit and looks good. I can't comment on performance, since I haven't used them. I've run similar lines on several other vehicles and had positive results, so I expect these to be similar.

Each box has 4 pads, so one box covers both wheels on an axle. You need one box of DP6992 and one box of DP6993 to do all four brakes.

The rears come with a different style shim for the piston side, and the instructions specify to not use any other shims.

I have about 6 months on Napa caliper rebuilds in the rear with no issues. Have the fronts to swap on but haven't got around to them yet.

100% OEM brake system parts. Stainless braided brake lines are a marketing gimmick.
I can lock up 35s on dry blacktop and kick in ABS.
There's an entire thread on brake system parts including part numbers and showing the crap NAPA calipers.

i think i read up on it but its a lot to keep track of. APPRECIATE this.
can i just ask you if i need this anti-squeal kit and the shim kit i guess if i buy OEM pads?
or folks on here have recommendations for non-OEM pads. you advise against these or does it matter? just curious?
lastly, can you remind me why 100 series OEM pads are not OK?
thanks man.

For a full job, I also replace the clips, slider bolts and boots on the rear calipers plus the slide pins, anti rattle clips and retainer spring wire on the fronts. Either look them up or ask your parts counter. There are even aftermarket options for these parts if you don't want to buy from Toyota

/thanks/ charlie. i think they were short three o rings and didn't have the bolts so you also remind me to source those...

@landcruiser3DP Yup. When I rebuild calipers, EVERYTHING gets replaced with new OEM parts, including the bleeders, banjo bolts, anti-squeal shims, yadda, yadda. They're fully loaded with new pads and hardware, ready to install. It is not economical, but my truck stops.

IMO, there's no discernible difference between OEM 80 Series pads and EBC green pads. I stick with OEM, but use what you like. I would never use any bargain priced brake parts, regardless of the cost.

The 100 Series pads are thicker and wider, protrude past the rotor, and don't really fit all that well. They're not going to give you any better stopping power, they just last longer. Since they hang over the edge of the rotor, you can't easily tell how worn they are. I don't use them.

Always properly bed in new pads/rotors/whatever. If you don't know how, look it up.
Brake fluid should be water clear. Smear some grease on the threads of the bleeders to keep them from sucking air back into the system when bleeding.

Not necessarily defending Napa, but that is a 5 year old thread and things can change. I would never put anything that looked like the examples in that thread on my truck. The pistons on the calipers I got don't look like that, the bleeders work fine, and the pins on the floating rear calipers were already greased. Nothing suspect about them that I've seen so far. YMMV.

I installed NAPA calipers 2-3 years ago, still stopping the overloaded pig. :)

hi JH. i really appreciate you dropping in on this. i admit to reading things and thinking i have it straight and then much later i find i need to put it to use and i'm still not sure i remember mostly because i never got to the point of fully understanding it. stainless lines snd 100 series pads fell squarely in this category.
can i ask you about LSPV please?
there are some OEM online for $100. or should i just disassemble it and clean out this cast iron (or whatever) part with brake fluid?
A. can i buy a new LSPV and put it in?
B. any idea why the fiche is telling me the part number i was given doesn't fit my 97? i DO see the part i need in the fiche now that someone showed me an ebay link for this part number but are 3FE and 1FZ FE different in the LSPV department?(!) anyway i will look up the 1997 fiche shown here to see if the part numbers are coming up different?
-
also please(!) i have a list of stuff for brake job and wheel bearings!
-
C. do i need any flare tools?
D. what about for wheel bearings. can i use a can of corn or something off the shelf at Whole Foods or Lowe's to drive those?
E. can i buy the SLEE kit 4X here for all four wheels? or is there a front and back for wheel bearing kits?
🙏
