Sorry but I'm going to back out of Red Cone this weekend. I really do want to start wheeling but think I might need a beginner type of run. Red Cone looks a little advanced for me. I'm off next week cause my folks are in town. Any suggestions about easy runs around the springs that I could do on my own? I think what I need is a wheeling mentor.

That's good you decided for yourself weather or not you should do the trail. Some guys dive in and don't know what they are getting in to. Try mt. Herman road to rampart and then hit balanced rock road and at the end is a beautiful lake. You have to return the same way but it is my favorite trail this close to the springs. This is one of the first trails I did and I was a little scared to do it by myself. Now that I have more experience it is like a gravel road to me. What kind of rig do you have? Also look into traildamage.com for info on these trails if you don't know about that site yet.

Missouri gulch and Illinois gulch are great options as well. Dakan road is a good one too. If you take balanced rock, there's a couple big washouts towards the bottom that cross up your suspension and test your traction, so be ready for that.

No problem man. Red Cone's not that bad, but it might be a bit too much to bite off for your first time out.

As for the "wheeling mentor", you could always ask Luke is he's accepting applications for "wheeling protege". He might be overbooked since he's got his hands full with some of us. :D

As for places to wheel, any of the above mentioned trails would be a good start. The first trip I took was what Matt mentioned. Up Mt. Herman and down Balanced Rock. Fun trail that's pretty mellow, but still feels like your "Wheelin'". :steer:

I have a stock 1997 FJ80. I call it "Godzilla" because it's big, green, and Japanese. :) Haven't done any upgrades at all.

The last Club meeting was my first. I'll be there tomorrow night at Red Line and will get some more suggestions. thanks for all of the recommendations.

I can see into the future...

80 's are very capable rigs, especially with lockers and some body armor. A stock-ish 80 made it up Blanca, and that's not a milk run. May have tested the sliders and skids but it made it.

If Phantom Canyon is open again that would be a good back road ride down to Canon City. Good winery down there.

Little Moab off of Rainbow Falls might be a good place to get an idea of what the 80 is capable of. 80s are incredibly capable even without lockers. Their massive weight helps a lot in the traction department.

If you ever go on a ride with Travis, just keep your distance... He will show you the worst possible line lol

As for the colors on red cone, you should all be in for a treat. They were just starting to change on the trail last weekend. It's also a bit more washed out than last time I remember.

Please take pics of the 100 as there is a really right squeeze in one section.

Updated our trip info: Out of WP at 7:00ish and Out of Bailey around 9:00ish.

Luke was talking about posting up some repeater info as well. I'll update the OP with that when it arrives.

Looking forward to this trip!

The CRA repeaters are 147.225 in Denver, and 145.160 in Colorado Springs. CTCSS tone 107.2. They are linked. I know for a fact the Denver repeater can be hit from I25 to Conifer and Bailey, not sure the farther west we get.

I will switch to 146.580 once I lose the repeater.

Thanks for the HAM info. OP is updated.

I'm still not sure if I'm going to meet you guys at WP or Bailey. I'll talk to the boss tonight and should know something soon.

If you don't mind a Rising Sun guest I think I might join. A good friend of mine is visiting and I was going to take her hiking, but I might be able to convince her this will be more fun :)

Right on man, the more the merrier!

Great news! My friend and her friend want to come along, and my girlfriend is even cancelling yoga with her girls to come along  So I'll be the guy in the 100 with 3 scared girls :D I'll meet you guys in Bailey as I live in Denver. Unfortunately I am only on CB, so hopefully one or two the group will have a CB as well.

Ha! Sounds good man, we'll see you in Bailey.

And I'll grab my CB stuff too (even though tend to "accidentally" turn it off half way through our trips :grinpimp:, once you go HAM...)

Sandy and I plan to go so guess I'll be the scared guy with one not scared girl (not sure I recall how to 4Wheel).
Are we meeting at 7:00 or leaving at 7:00? Would like to get as much sleep as possible - Leon beat the crap outta me last weekend!
See ya then.

Which way are you guys going in and what time are you planning to be at the trailhead?
