First, Thanks for this forum. Have gained alot of insight since finding this site.
Would like some opinions on recommended oil to use in 96 Cruiser. I have been using Amsoil for many years in other vehicles, but my source locally might be getting a bit troublesome. Just wondered if the valve train is happier with a certain brand or type. I am not wishing to start any kind of oil war here, just want some expert opinions. Thanks again

Thanks, I'll be looking into that brand. I've used Amsoil's Diesel synthetic in an older Buick with no problem but have been reading that some valve trains are kind of specific in their needs and didn't know if the 1Fz is one of them.

You should ignore all the advice here on MUD recommending 5w-40 and use what Toyota recommends for the vehicle (10w-30). If you want a slightly thicker oil then maybe 10w-30 high milage. Don't believe the HYPE. But synthetic is good obviously.

Yeah in a colder climate Toyota specs 5w-30.

Almost any oil will be fine in a 1FZ. Everyone has a favorite. I use Mobil1 every time. Usually 15w-50 but right now 0w-40. Any rated oil will be fine. I found some of the 5w-40 truck and suv on sale and stocked that for next time. It does not matter. The 1FZ is easy on oil. Don't stress on it. If you change frequently, any oil, even conventional non-synthetic oil will be fine.

"use what Toyota recommends"

You mean what the US govt mandates they recommend? Everywhere but the US, for the exact same engine, Toyota recommends 20w-50 oil. The thinner oil recommended in the US is to do with mileage standards and federal regulations and not to do with what's best for the engine.

Interesting... considering the climate you're in.

Doesn't someone above have a really long thread right now about their 80 overheating? Hmm interesting.

I was using Syn for a few years and leaks popped up everywhere. I went to Delvac dino oil and oil pressure is higher and no leaks, so far

Sure do. At that has exactly what to do with my oil?

I had to go back and read if I had missed it having something to do with oil. Nope....

I'm in the Bay Area. Been using Fully Synthetic Mobil 1 10w-30 the last 11 years (150k) on my 3rd Gen. Never burn any oil between oil change. So 10w-30 is going to my 80 series. Reasonable price from Walmart or Costco.

The oil arguments have gone on for years and no one is going to change any one else's opinions.

Before some of the advanced synthetics existed there was no way to get really wide ranges between cold and hot operation.

Before multi weight oils, oil was just a single weight. And then someone figured out how to engineer a way to get thinner oil when cold so it could still be pumped but it could still have some of the protection properties of the thicker oil when it got hot. Advances have allowed oils to increase that difference before you might have had a 10w30, only a 20 weight gap, but now you can have 0w40, and 10w60 a 40 and 50 weight gap.

A multi weight oil has to pass the tests for both weight oils so a 10w30 must pass both the 10w and 30w tests, but fail the 5w and 40w tests.

As technology has advanced why would you not want an oil that pumps better cold, but provides better hot temp protection?? 0W40 full synthetic is my go to. The only reason I can see not wanting the lighter weight oil is when it is cold it could seep past old seals.

I was very, very hesitant to try the Turbo Diesel Mobile 1 5w-40. I had no idea it was going to provide a better running vehicle. I wasn't expecting any performance improvement, just thought it would be better for the vehicle long-term--I am blown away at how much more responsive the vehicle is. I did have a full tune-up a five months ago so it really surprised me that I would get this boost.

It's legit. I don't know NLXTACY but I am appreciative of his advice on many topics, oil included. His overheating issues will come to light and it won't have anything to do with oil.

BUT, if your engine has small leaks and you've been running dyno any synthetic will most likely magnify your leaks. So be careful not blame the oil.

Well I'll spell it out for you, I'm saying, maybe engine temp. has some correlation to oil viscosity.
