I have an '08 LX570 that just began developing a leak on the drivers side flange just after the cat connecting to the mid-pipe.

I'm looking for some recommendations on Exhaust Flange repair kits. If anyone has had experience with these kits, I would appreciate any advice on which brands to consider and how well they actually function and if they are comparable to a "proper" muffler shop job.

Thanks

Never used a flange kit but can't see how that rusted flange can be simply repaired via kit. Exhaust work is pretty rudimentary, I wouldn't think it should cost too much for a muffler shop to cut/weld new flanges on and be done with it. They may also help identify other potential issues (like rusted mounts).

Wow, so that's what Nova Scotia winters can do to stainless steel exhaust.

Anyway, I would really recommender going to a proper exhaust shop and have new flanges welded on. It won't cost much at all, leave a better result, less possibility of leaks, and the gasket can be serviced by you in the future.

Those "repair kits" have their place. They are good for when the car isn't worth it to do a legit repair, or a welder is just not available. They problem is they just don't last, without leaking very long. Sadly, I've replaced quite a few of them over the years when they would come into the shop.

Thanks for the quick replies, guys! I'm going to head in to the local muffler shop Monday. Hopefully it'll turn out to be just the flanges.

As bad as we get it here in NS, up in Newfoundland they rot even faster! I'm still impressed how well this truck has held up over the years of road salt and the abuse/neglect it suffered when my cousin bought it new (lack of maintenance, everyone and their dog drove it, parked by the ocean for 5 years, but it only had 50,000Km when I got it and is just at 100,000Km).

My exhaust looked similar. The flanges are not stainless, and the exhaust tube likely is a lower grade 400 Series stainless. With proper work, those bolts have a good chance of being extracted, the pieces on my truck did. Clean off the scale, new gasket, and run it for a few more years.

So, it turns out that there is actually a hole on the top of the muffler. Checking how much Toyota wants for a stock muffler, I've started to look for aftermarket mufflers and went through other threads. I know I'm taking this thread a bit off topic, but correct me if I'm wrong; There's not anything vehicle specific out there from Borla and other "big" manufacturers? I'm not looking for a louder muffler, I actually prefer quiet. I'm guessing that a factory part will end up being the way I go, but I thought I check to see about other possible options.

I did read a post Brian made last fall that sounded like there might be a Borla model that could fit this application, but I'm not sure which "system" he was referring to exactly here:

I'd be concerned if folks did not question things, discussion is always good. The stock system is well designed for what it is... Easy to manufacture, price, low sound, acceptably long lasting by Land Cruiser standards, fits in the available space, meets emissions, and flows well enough to hit the hp target of 383 hp on mid octane fuel. We have a large body of evidence that some serious quantities of power are hiding in the 5.7 engine, even in normally aspirated form (no supercharger). The key here is tube size w/o destroying part throttle torque. Generally, the larger we go, the more we can gain at larger throttle openings and more RPM. The muffler I have for this system was designed by Borla for an OEM performance V8 application. Two in, one out, similar principles in sound reduction, but better gas flow. Will it be life altering, like the TRD charger, no, but a good ball park on gains is 8hp + or -, maybe 15 on a supercharged engine with the 3" tailpipe in place of the 2.75" (same as stock) A great, but somewhat old book, on the entire subject is "Scientific Design of Exhaust and Intake Systems".... we stand on the shoulders of giants, to say the least.

@dirtydeeds did mine. Not sure what shipping would look like but they offer a 200 series cat back system, tucked higher than stock, and no secondary muffler (but 2 helmholz resonators to cut out the drone).

curious i know this is an old thread, but what did you end up doing. I have a similar looking appearance in the same spot, with a couple small leaks and no easy way to just replace the gasket

Exhaust work is fun! My first serious fab/TIG project was to build a manifolds back exhaust pieced together from mandrel bends for my 2FE (taller block puts the exhaust manifold in a different place). Find a quality hotrod shop or specialty exhaust shop that will use 300 series stainless. If you really want they might be able to salvage the stock flange (I did to mate to the stock manifolds, but the rest was ball sockets; v bands would be step up over ball sockets). But I'd go custom from the cats back and be done.

Do you have a link on their site? I see Tundra but not Land Cruiser?
