i have never done this before so is the kit marlin sells with new wheel bearings all i will need? or should i get some parts from cdan?
any of suggestions would be appreciated!

marlins kit is plenty, i can tell you, you need an inner axle seal and the wipers. But you may as well do the rest

yea that's what i figured, i just wish i did not have to do it know i would like to have the $ to put longfeilds in and a selectable locker and 4.88's but i will just have to rebuild the knuckles for know. oh well the paint will be well cured by the time i put the high-steer on.

oh BTW get the MArlin HD seals they are GREAT!

Ok, Myth or true...

You can put the inner seals in by cutting them and placing them around the knuckle. This keeps you from having to pull the entire knuckle.

?

Truth or fiction?

And IF I were to do this would it be wise to cut the top on a diagonal to keep a better seal than just cutting it straight.

PS: I know it's not as good as replacing w/o cutting, but just how bad is cutting them? And per say, just how long won't it last as opposed to doing it the right way?

Suggestion before you start. Take the truck to a self-serve car wash and blast the snot out of those knuckles. Trust me, if they are clean going into the job you will have a more enjoyable time doing this nasty, messy, greasy, grimy task.

After you get the job done, take it to the car wash and keep them clean. You will thank yourself should you ever need to do a trail repair.

For the record, I hate this job ... and I noticed my knuckles are starting to weep. At least I already have a pair of Marlin seals to drop in.

CDan is a good friend of mine ... so go to Marlin. :D OEM axle seal kits are stupid money and it's one item I will go aftermarket for. Especially since you can get the new seals from Marlin which are much better than Toyota.

pappy i will wait for marlin, i have heard good thing about them, and have also dealt with them, and not had any problems so far. besides i only get paid every two weeks now so i have to wait any how. i think God is telling me to take a chill pill.

You mean the rubber and felt wipers? I guess you could, but if it's leaking there then you need to replace the axle seal, and if you've gone minimal to get to the axle seal, it's only 8 more nuts to get the knuckle off and change them right.... So why bother?

hey, ADD moment here... But if the seals are felt... and dry...

I wonder if you can't melt wax in/on them and they last a ton longer?

My guess is that if they're dry, mud and water and turning on the knuckle would degrade them some until axle grease got in there as a seal/lube...

huh... wonder how that'll work...

paying that much for the kit and having my garage to work in why would i want to take a short cut. on the trail yea maybe but hell i will just follow the fsm and looks like i might have to fab ub some sst's.

What you're explaining is how Bobby's new Wiper Seals are done. Pirate4x4.Com Bulletin Board - View Single Post - Toyota Knuckle Lifetime Wiper Seal

It had to come to me... I couldnt think of something to compare it to...

Like a K&N w/o the oil... A dry K&N? Wouldn't work near as good.

Or a Duster w/o oil... The oil is wax. A dry oilskin?

My Dain Fart is something along those lines. The wax would keep it like a wick on a oil lamp. Never using more than it had to. The seal, b/c it's dry, is like a one piece seal. It'll either get all dirty at once or greasy at once, and so on...

B/c the felt is already impregnated, it can't degrade from outside sources, or a one time dip in the mud or dirty water. And as it became degraded b/c it's impregnated it would be fresh from the point of degradation to the inner part. It could never be fully contaminated unless it was fully shot if that makes any sense.

Like these things don't last a long time anyway. Just a thought, sorry for the rant, had a  moment....
