UPDATE:

At sparrow fart on Wednesday morning, all of the body parts and the tub are being delivered to the bodyshop where they will undergo a few months of work, commencing with sand blasting, then rust removal, welding in new metal, prepping, and painting.

I will then finish stripping the axles out of the chassis, then I will sand blast and then powder coat the chassis

My plan is to paint it the same MATT gun metal silver as the ICON as below
Any idea where to get that paint? Color codes? I'm trying to paint my 60 matte and haven't really found a good color.

I have just returned from the body shop now after dropping off the tub and body parts
The painter is going to mix me a few batches to color check - once I get the final color I will let you know the color code

But yes it is a normal gunmetal gloss with a matting agent.

We are also going to do a test panel with a coat of clear that has been matted as well.

I got some bad news from the body shop yesterday :frown:

Turns out the bib of the LX is fiberglass, it had obviously been changed by PO as a result of cruisercancer :crybaby:

Fortunately I had a spare one lying around from when I did the rebuild on Kermit  - so it was sent to the body shop for sandblasting.

Hi great posts!!

just wanted to ask you... on your Kermit build, I see you used a 70 power steering unit, did you use the 70 pitman arm? I am trying to match up a mixture of 70's ball joints with 40 idler arms, track rods and a 40 steering damper. Can you remember what you used? I think we may have solved it but wanted any sugestions from someone else who has done it. I have a bj40 I shipped from OZ, an Aluminum one that I am working on at the moment and another one from Ireland for bits!

Did you go to Oz to sort the packing of your 40's? in to containers. or did you trust someone to do it for you? I keep seeing lost of trucks mainly 40s I would love to ship them over
Good luck with this build!!

Cheers Jonnie

Hi Jonnie

I actually used a 60 Series power steering pump and box.
I had a problem locating a left hand thread tie rod end for the track rod, so I used a Left hand thread 60 series tie rod end and then used a 60 series track (relay) rod which I cut and welded into the standard 40 Series track (relay) rod and used the standard Right hand thread Tie rod end.
We made up a special clamp to allow the steering damper to mount to 60 seires portion of the track rod

Yes I went to Aus to sort our some of the shipping issues, I travel to Aus twice a year for business
(I have shipped a total of 6 x 40 Series from Aus to South Africa to date, we did 3 two years ago, and another three this year. 3 x 40 series will fit into a standard 40ft container)

UPDATE:-
Tub and body panels have been sandblasted, some of the body panels have been sprayed with a primer just to prevent the sandblasted surface from rusting as all the rust removal work starts as a matter of priority.

Hi TLC_4Play

thanks for the info regarding the LX badges, i managed to source some from Toyota in Dubai. I will be back in Oz next week so will post some pics of the progress.

Thanks for the pictures of your steering! Seem to actually have sorted it, all i need to do now (well for the steering) is to get a custom Damper, the BJ40 one I have does not extend enough for this set up and the one I have I think off a 70 ddoes not compress enough!

when I find my memory card reader I am going to start a post on the build I am attempting. It will be slow but hopefully interesting to someone!

on another note, what company did you use in Australia to organise the shipping of the three? and which port did it leave from. I am tempted to get a container and head out to buy three(good excuse for a small hoilday). The RoRo route which I have used before means that they have to be registered to leave (I think) so limits my choices and I have to persuade(money) the seller to take them to the docks. Did it take you long to find your three?

Cheers

Jonnie

Jonnie
I used the shipping Company that does the shipping for my South African and Australian Companies
Name - Poseidon Freight - Att; Anna Denning Tel: + 61 2 8338 0633; Fax: +61 2 8338 1753; Email: anna@poseidonfreight.com

The first container of three left from Brisbane Qld, the second container of three left from Sydney NSW.

OK here are some pics of the paintwork on some of the body panels.
I am trying to get close to the MATT Gunmetal colour - the same as the ICON Land Cruisers
unfortunately the flourescant light and camera flash dont do the colour any justice.

Presently this is 3 base coats of normal gloss paint with 3 coats of clearcoat with a matting agent added.

Here is a sample of the detail going into fixing the rust.

This is the colour in "normal" light - looks very dark

This is the colour in flourescant light - never a good indicator of colour

And this is the colour in the sunlight - Oh yes this does have a metallic flake

Keep up the good work - I really like the ICON colour, I had a similar colour on my first FJ40 (not a matte finish though).

p.s - finally got my LX registered, still working on finding replacement parts etc not 100% happy with the gutter replacement, but I didnt get to do the welding so I cant complain too much.

Dan
I / we havent finished installing the new rain gutter on mine yet either - its a mammoth task and a lot more complex than it appears at first sight.

but the new rain gutter will be finished soon
