So we have a 1970 f motor and a 72 f motor.

Phase one: With the help of our fellow club members David pulled the engine tranny and transfer out while I was laid up with my broken back and ribs. Thanks again guys!

Phase 2: The head, valve cover and side cover were pulled to check the top end. Looked pretty good for 39 years old. What was visible in the cylinders looked smooth and no obvious cracks / damage.

Phase 3: Next step is flip it over and pull the oil pan off and check the bottom end. Who knows what well find, or more specifically what David will find. I think he's doing this today while Im stuck in the office.

After we figure out whats wrong with this engine the plan is to go over the 1970 engine to see which motor ( or combination of parts) would be the better option. Either way I know I will need gaskets for everything and we'll probably do some level of a rebuild. Anybody know where the best place to get a gasket "kit" would be. I really dont want to buy each gasket individually and the usual cruiser parts places want an arm and a leg for their kits.

I know we'll need at least: Head gasket, side cover, valve cover, rear main, front seal, thermostat housing, thermostat seal, and oil pangasket.

In addition to the gaskets I may be looking for rings and maybe rod bearings

Try carquest....I got my clutch kit from them...they were cheaper than anyone else, plus you don't have to pay for shipping

The default for gaskets is OEM, especially the head gasket. Call Rick Arflin at Ralph Hayes and see what he can do for you. The gasket kits are MUCH cheaper than doing the gaskets one at a time.

There is also a website that sells AISIN parts (basicaly OEM but not stamped such). I've bought a few things from them and have been happy. Marshall will hopefully chime in soon with the link.

I love Remflex gaskets for the manifold to head. Good stuff - works awesome to fill any leaks.

Everyone has said to do the Toyota head gasket. Other than that I guess we will see whats available. CCOT has a "kit" that has all the gaskets for the top end for around $70. Might go that route. Anybody use their gaskets before?

I don't think anyone is beating ACC on factory parts pricing right now, but you will have to pay for shipping.

OEM is the way to go. Ralph Hayes or ACC.

The oem kit has a better oil pan gasket and head gasket. Oil pan gasket is a 1 piece which is a much better design.

I'll have to check with them. David talked to someone he knew at a toyota dealer that told him they were discontinued. Think it was the one in Myrtle Beach. One piece oilpan gasket sounds good. The 3 piece is a pain in the azz.

Dont think I want to wait that long! By the way, you find out anything about the winch line for the ATV?

I sent you an email shortly after you PM'd - to the infidel address. I'll check the address and PM you the email today.

Short answer is yes, I can do ATV winch lines and yes, I can beat Warn's price with a stick.

Thanks!

I found a spun bearing on #5 cylinder. I think I'm going to try to start the '70 engine tomorrow. (on the trailer) Otherwise, I'll be checking on a 2F or rebuild parts.

The '70 "F" motor cranked right up. now to get all of the parts swaped over and get it in the 40.

Good to know. Remember id like to have all the parts off that motor you don't use. Including any bolts. I'm planning to rebuild the cubans old F that locked up.

I'll bring what I can (small parts) to GSMTR.
I'll get the rest back somehow, thanks.

New plan, Since the 70 f motor cranked right up were going to give it a good "once over" and put her in. Were going to pull the valve cover and oil pan and check it all out, install new gaskets ( valve cove, side cover, oil pan)along with a new rear main seal and bolt it all in. Throw on my Downey header and my DUI ignition and well be set. Hopefully I'll have my 40 back on the road by mid summer.:p:clap:
