Has anyone ever seen or heard of a hand crank option for the rear window onthe FJ55? I saw a picture in my Hayes manual regarding this and it looks like it was a stock option!!! I have thought about just making a small rod that would fit through a custom hole in the tailgate that could actuate the gearbox in the rear window motor... any thoughts.

Until then, I am trying to get a brass gear and hoping my crappy plastic one doesn't go out again....

Handcrank rearwindows were only available in non-US markets.
Plastic gear is still easy to get through the dealer.

Through the dealer??!! I will call the one in South Tahoe right now. Did you find one? If I could find new ones I'd buy five, or jsut get one of those brass ones from Cruiserguy. Actually trying that. I just hate electric stuff on my car.

Thanks!!

i hear them aussie guys got the hand cranks on their tail gate models. From what I understand, they'd rather have our electric set ups. Maybe try reaching across the pond to make a trade?

What I can't figure out is how to make that theft-proof?

It looks like anyone with a crank could lower the rear window and gain access to your Pig.

I always thought the crank had a cover over it w/ a keyed lock??? I must be trippin...

^ that looks real good. Im about to get my 55 and am thinking about getting a hand crank in it. How hard/easy is it to find and install?

That makes me laugh. Toyota had some problems with making a decent lock back in the day...stick just about anything in the rear window "lock" and it will turn. I use my pocketknife to open my rear window more than I use the key...

Drool? Why? Just 'cause you can't have it? Handcrank would be a PIA every time I drove it. Electrical is only a PIA every 7 or 8 years. I like raising & lowering the rear window from the driverseat. At night, when there's bright headlights behind you, adjust the rearwindow so that the bumperstickers block the light. And, just think, what other Toyota had a power window in 1968? That's right. Every US LandCruiser carries the first ever Toyota power window. A museum piece in your tailgate.

I agree!! I have no problems at all with the power window. It's fast, works from the drivers seat or tailgate and it even wow'd the folks manning the Mexican military checkpoints when we drove through Mexico!!

Install a brass gear (we should have a price on them and be having ordering instructions in the next week or two) and there should be no more problems ever! I think the plastic gear is finally obsolete.

Hi fellow cruiser-heads,

Yes, you guys are right, here in Australia we either had the crank-handle (such as mine does) for the earllier model 55's with the tailgate opening down, or for the later models they were fitted with "barn doors" opening out. Did you get barn-doors over there. Only found out there was an electric rear window via the Promotional poster given to me by the previous owner.

So glad to have found your 55's preservation society!! The pigs are getting scarce over here. First found out about all the 55's over there via the TLC company.

Looking forward to scanning all the posts.

Regards from good ol' OZ,
Nathan
