Mine was lose when I got my truck 2 weeks ago. tried the single mounting screw, it was lose but tightening it didn't help, in fact it made it worse. Took it all off and found the two tiny screws to be stripped. Put some thread lock on them and it fixed it for now. Replacing the screws and thread locking it down should fix it for good.

BTW, the earlier rear view, from 98-99 is way cheap. I don't think it auto tints though or has the compass. Well under $100 though via Amayama and UAE. Think the one I have in route (for backup) cost me like $55.

And here is a high quality rear view,
Rear View Mirror with VFD Temperature and Compass

$225 is way cheaper than an OEM replacement.

Cheers

Good tip. My LX has the one with power, but I'd be cool with a simple one.

Bringing this dinosaur thread back to say it helped me. The wobble was horrible, especially with the V1 hanging from it. Took the whole thing apart, tightened the two screws on the black bracket, one of which was a little loose, dropped the silver clip into the e-brake hole, got it out by removing console (ARGH!) and found it to be convex. Flattened it out and crimped the u-shaped end a bit so it would grip the bar it grabs without falling out, tightened back up and voila! Fortunately none of my screw heads or holes were stripped. Thanks all.

That's the largest rearview mirror of its size in the world!

Wobbly rear view mirror has been one of my biggest peeves since I bought mine. I finally got around to fixing mine today. I read one solution saying that the screw needs to be replaced. Mine was cranked on there pretty good and the head was stripped out so I had to drill it out. I tried just using the new screw at first, but it didn’t work at all. The metal “spring” mentioned in this thread was noticeably bent so I did some experimenting with a pair of needle nose pliers bending the “middle” portion flat and I bent the top and bottom “tabs” just enough to allow me to attach it to the windshield bracket. I attached the spring and screwed the mirror on and it’s now on nice and firm. No more wobble for now. I’m assuming after a few months after normal driving, it will start wobbling again. The spring is the weak part here.

Old screw drilled out with part number of replacement screw:

Notice the top of the “spring” is bent and he bottom tab is open:

Here’s the same “spring” with the top portion flattened out and the bottom tab closed up:

That same “spring” made mine wobble. I was so happy the day i received a new one and got it in.

Does anyone know if Toyota sells the small gold screws that secure the black bracket individually? I only have 1 and will be buying the new “spring clip” as well as the black screw above given mine is stripped— hoping someone has a part number for the small gold screw that secure the black bracket. Thanks!

I’m going to add to what Pahizzl said.

The spring caused my wobble, and that wobble comes from the two side ‘wings’ not being in contact with the mount and letting it slide.

So like Pahizzl did straighten out your spring and then fit it into the windshield mount making sure the wing is up high enough to engage with some black metal protrusions. It’s a bit tricky to fit the hook, tab and wings simultaneously

+1 for tightening the screws that attach the bracket to the windshield, that fixed my wobble.

when I removed the visible screw below the mirror, keep an eye out for the “metal dude”, mine hopped down and hide under the seat.

after tightening the bracket to the windshield, I loosely attached the metal dude to the back of the mirror, slotted it in position, then continued to tighten. That proved easier than trying to line up the exterior screw with the metal dude in the bracket (hope that makes sense).

I'm fighting with mine right now. I'm going to try to install it on the mirror loosely like this.

Funny story. Family loaded up this morning getting ready to head out to Vegas for a few days. We were waiting for our daughter to come out and I figured let’s take a look at the mirror.

yup, mirror is definitely loose at the base. Let’s grab a screwdriver and unscrew it. One of the tiny brass looking screw falls out as did the metal bracket. Now I’m sitting here and everyone is now ready to go and I’m futzing with the screws and bracket. Dropped the bracket a few times trying to get it to stay so I can attach the mirror to screw it in. After several attempts I did it. Secured the mirror and no more wobble. The rest of the drive was uneventful thankfully.

So, does anybody have a source for the two small screws? I think they're 3mm but I'm concerned the threads are stripped out of my baseplate. Anybody know where to get another OEM baseplate, if not the screws?

I don't think they're a typical metric thread pitch. I took one of the screws to my local Ace Hardware, and I couldn't find anything with the same thread. I finally broke down and bought the kit from Toyota with the two screws, spring, and mirror base.

Albeit, you'll probably end up with 50 or 100 screws, but it should only cost around 5-10 bucks in all.
And if you need some help sizing the screw: ISO 724 - Metric Threads - https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/metric-threads-d_777.html
You may need a set of calipers for an accurate O.D.

This thread is EXACTLY why I love this place!

Had the wobble with the rearview mirror. Initially tried tightening the exterior screw, no joy. Realized after investigation that the black base attached to the windshield was loose too. Unscrewed the mirror and the metal clip/spring fell out... Tightened the two small screws on either side of the base, and fixed that issue. After fighting it for 30 mins trying to get it all back together, I decided to consult 'Mud after a YouTube search was no help. Quick search and found this thread. Made a couple small bends on the clip and all back together!

Thanks everyone!!

My screw is so tight it's starting to strip. Enough left I think, now that I know it does come out, to use impact driver on it. Thanks for the pics.
