Ok, after quite a bit of research, it looks like rear tire carriers are more rare and expensive than I would like. Has anyone tried using a rear tire carrier from an 89-94 Fourunner on an 89 - 94 pickup? Any reason this would not work? Be a complete disaster? I would like to carry a tire and possibly fuel and propane on the back.

I believe ...

The rear tire carrier was only used on 1990-91 4Runners, and not beyond that. The corner that holds the carrier is reinforced in those years, and not after that.

^ You are correct on all counts. Honestly I'd be surprised if you could safely make it work on a pickup, but anything is possible with enough time, skill, and money.

I would just put the tire carrier in the bed. Like what some older trucks have.

Or, learn to weld and make your own.

Yup my 90 4runner has a reinforced d-pillar to hold the weight of the rack and you still would be pushing the weight limits with any thing bigger than a 31/10.50 you would be better off making your own bumper mounted one. But good luck!!

That is pretty much what I suspected. I can't really weld in the streets of Vancouver, so DIY will have to wait. Bumper swing-outs seem to be pretty expensive, at least as far as I've seen.
