Did you consider adding a tube or angle iron behind the lower edge of the support plate? That would add some rigidity and maybe eliminate that skinny vertical member you have welded there in the middle.

David,

Yes, i have considered it but after looking at some pictures of Slee's set up (I would be kidding myself if I said I came up with this design as I am borrowing smart design from our master :) ) I think the one vertical support will do the trick. I have a horizontal bar going across the top of the plate to support the "pull" the weight of the tire puts on the plate and the Vertical bar supports the push that the tire puts on the lower part of the plate. I cant imagine that skinny bar ever bending due to how it is sitting. No different than how a 2x10 floor joist in a home has greater load bearing capacity sitting on edge, but lay the same board flat and it will flex.

It wouldn’t take long to add in what you are talking about and it wouldn’t hurt either, other than adding additional weight.

What I am considering doing is adding gussets to the adjustable tire mount, but again, I'm not sure if it is overkill or not? Does having the tire snug up to the hoops provide enough support to were the gussets are unnecessary?

gussets would be nice. Just hate to see some heavy stuff cantilevered out without them. Even with nice welds like yours.

Your welds look to have good penetration (by the looks of the plate with the lugs) so it might be OK to run it with out any further gusseting. But gussets are cheap insurance. :)

I took the advise to add additional gussets to the adjustable tire mount. Happy I went ahead and did it, quick and simple..

I finished up the carrier for the most part. I am now working on a removable license plate bracket that will be added to the carrier. It should be cool. My wife got me a new OEM TOYOTA light fixture that the 4-Runners used a while back. I want this to be removable because down the road I am going build a C02 bracket holder to the right of the tire that will hold the license plate. I will do a separate write up on this later.

The only thing I have to do is get a new BFG AT/KO as well as pack the bearings in the spindle so I can put the dome cap on the spindle.

I primed and painted the carrier with Rustolium profesional grade paint. I have used this stuff on all my stuff I have built and it holds up great. I used simi gloss and it is a perfect match to Slee's powder coat on the bumper.

Attached are a few pictures.

Looks very professional...nice work..but you need to polish that tire to match the carrier :o))

Is that your H3?

Embrace the minivan!
Nice work, c ya on the trail. JT

Looks great! I'd put a cap on the hinge cylinder to keep water and grit out of there. You could probably pick up a big rubber one at a good hardware store.

The spindle "cylinder" cap is now on. I had yet to pack the bearings when i took the pictures. The 4x4 Labs spindle kit came with everything you need so I didn't have to purchase the cap separately.

do you have any movement issues?

I've got mine on and I have some movement away and towards the rear hatch. It's basically flex but I'm just wondering if others have something similar or whether it's because I don't have a steel bumper?

I've also noticed that going over bumpy roads the tyre will vibrate side to side. Maybe I need to stiffen the whole thing up a little more.

any new pictures with the new tire??
