SilverDuc,

I think the glass has to be all the way down.....being electric I guess the only access is through using the switch on the dash. Of course you can access the mechanisms inside the rear door panel if need be to get the glass down.

I just wish mine had glass and was working!! Dave

Yes, the glass has to be all the way down to open the tailgate.
You can access the inner workings of the tailgate thru the access panel, unclip the glass from the regulator and slide the glass down if the motor is not working...lots of fun, that one.

GO for it!

Even a newbie can do it, but pack your lunch and a  or three. Spent most of last Saturday dealing with the same situation. Got it out, cleaned all connections, reinstalled motor, cleaned and regreased gears and the reward was a fast, quick working tailglate glass, including the supposedly "shot" motor. Did replace the fiberboard wiring block that connects the harness, keyed switch and motor in the tailgate. Mine was breaking in two at the block for the main power wire, as were the two in my other spare tailgates. NAPA has an appropriately sized for heavier wire plastic block, slightly shorter but another hole drilled in the mounting bracket took care of that. NAPA part # is JB3081...about eight bucks.
Go for it...

If your tailgate is in disrepair do yourself a favor and replace the drive gear while you are in there and lub everything up. They can be bought new from Toyota for about 25 dollars.

x2 on the drive gear. I have made a run of brass ones in the past (no more broken plastic ones for me), but I have no plans to make more at this time.
