Dang murf, I'm in the market for some straight LCA's.

I just had mine done (thanks MountainCruiser!) and wanted to get them on before my surgery.

Sorry about the crappy pic, I have an motion sensor light in the garage and it went off just before I took the picture in the dark.

off topic...a little.

what size are the bolts that hold the upper and lower control arms on an 80 series? Length too. Also, are the upper and lower bolts the same size?

Thanks

Lower bolts on a 80 are larger but the same length.

The RLCA (Rear Lower Control Arm) mod was respectably stolen from CSC’s own Mountain Cruiser.

1.75 x .188 (1.36ID) Dom tubing seamless
Factory RLCA on a ’96 are 1.34 x .170 seamed tubing
Factory length was maintained
8 rosettes welds per RLCA
Cut factory RLCA in half -remeber you loose ~1/8 when cutting
I held the sleeve back 1” from the bushing holder
Wrapped the bushing with a wet rag to keep the bushing from cooking
Stitched welded tubing together to keep temps under control
Cleaned and smoothed the welded rosettes
Primed and painted Kylon satin black
Reinstalled

In the past I have used angle iron with excellent results but I liked this new approached.
You pick up ~3/8” clearance over angle - Wooo
Total tubing thickness ~3/8” – strong enough for what I do
Ended up 1lb addition weight per RLCA over 1½ x ¼ angle iron
The ability to slide sideways easier when hung up – still up for debate as a pro or con
Cost maybe 5x over 1½ x ¼ angle iron
Most important - I like the look better

Material Cost – 4’ Dom seamless tubing $50 shipped

Contact Mountain Cruiser (Tony) if you would like to pay to have this mod done.

Phil,
Do you mind providing the name of the steel supplier that shipped you the DOM Tube? Locally I would have to special order and pay for a full length piece.

Thanks,

Derrick

No Johnnie joint in Mountain Cruisers unless of course you bring it to him for the install.

Update: I found a local supplier willing to sell me half a stick (10') of the DOM Tube for $60 so now I have enough to do 2 sets :bounce:. I will post pics when I am done. Thanks for posting the details on this mod.

So do the MountainCruiser LCA's have the Johnnie Joint in the upper end? That looks like the Schizzle to me!! John

Hey Guys,
Would it be worth it to add these johnny joints in the upper end like the discontinued MAF LCAs? I have seen Currie's on the 4Wheel Parts website for around $40 a pop but I prefer to purchase from a MUD vendor if they carry them. I do rock crawl a bit so I have thinking about doing this but then I saw a set that wild west fab makes and they use OEM on both ends so it makes me wonder if it is the way to go or stick with OEM? Opinions welcome.

Derrick

I run/prefer stock bushings. They flex as much or more than than the rear is capable of, so no gain from the joints. On a heavy rig the joints take a beating, require more maintenance/repair.

Did anyone try Industrial Metal Supply in Tempe for the DOM? I am asking because when Kevin and I were there I seen DOM but did not look at pricing or sizes.

Phoenix Metal Stores- Industrial Metal Supply Locations In Arizona

I called all the metal supply yard, some did not carry it, some had it but wanted a cut charge, and some offered there remant pile with a there might be a piece in there. If IMS is just south of the freeway there price was close to on line but when you add in gas and time on-line was a no brainer. It arrived clean, no surface rust in a nice tube at my front door and cut to length.:) I would order again for the no hassle experience.

Yeah their cut charge is less than desirable for sure

So, how many sets would you get from a full 20' section? Might be the potential for a group buy here. I would be interested. John

Mashed a lower control arm last week climbing out of a rocky hole on a bet. Quick search and the only upgrade option I've found is Slee's... but $300? Yikes! This fix looks tough/effective, but before I start cutting I wanted to make sure there haven't been any problems. Is this mod working out for you guys?

you can buy the set of used stock LCA's from yjeff here on the board (just took them off - in good condition) and cut and weld in a stonger outside piece of pipe like mentioned in the posts above. Its sucha close fit I would imagine you would be better off with some straight ones to start off with.
