I used all OE or OEM components (e-clip) about 4 years ago when I had this problem and so far so good...

Just when you think you have it figured out.

Hey Spike, Did you get a new adjuster arm, or did you use the old one?
I'm curious about wear on the arm, and also curious about different sizes of "clip lands" or whatever you might call the groove that the clip sits in on the shoe pin. I've seen different amounts of play depending on the brand of the shoes. When I was using E clips there was a lot of slop, and the c clips tightened it right up.
This might be an issue of aftermarket parts having more variability than OEM, as well...

I cleaned and used never-seize on the old adjusters. They seemed in good shape, as well as the arms.

I'm not sure if I used Toyota shoes or not. I *think* I did, but they may have been a brand called 'Enduro' (Aus EBC)

Also, I looked at the date of that picture and it's been more like 7 years now ...

But you may be right as I bet most people just reuse the E-clip as it's spring steel, but is at a pivot point. I know I used new ones.

Well so far so good on the quick fix, after driving a bit today they havent locked up, will report back again in a few days.

However, now im having the handbrake light come on after ive had my foot on the brake for a while, any ideas?

Maybe I should change back to the old adjuster, there was no problems with it. Although I have remember there was only one auto adjuster which was the side im having dramas with, but not on the other side. I went to a wreckers and put one on the other side which seems like the right thing as they have auto adjusters on both sides, unless they are only supposed to be on the one side and this is causing my dramas?

A month or so back when I rebuilt my rear brakes I purchased new c clips from Toyota (the larger ones that fit inside the drum behind the smaller 'e clip'). The new Toyota ones were too thick to fit correctly inside the groove on the pin on the shoes, and would prevent the shoe from returning under the spring tension when the handbrake was released. I ended up using the old c clip and e clip as these worked and fitted correctly.... Probably doesn't help you - but a possibility?

Thanks mate, after driving around today they didnt get hot enough to discolour the paint so im ahead a little!

However now the light has gone from being on after braking to on all the time, any ideas?

Thinking I will just change back to the adjuster wheel I took out, maybe its just ill fitting or something.

I also didnt touch the bellcrank adjuster at all. Should I of adjusted that due to new shoes?

I have never touched the bell crank adjuster - apart from unseizing it...
If I was you I would manually back off the shoes (need 2 screwdrivers - 1 to move the adjuster backwards, and the other to hold the auto adjusting arm off it while you are adjusting it), then apply the handbrake and release it to see if the shoes are moving inwards under Spring tension, or if they are staying 'out'. This may give you a clue as to what is happening - although I have had too many beers to figure out what this would be....

The shoes are definitely adjusting out onto the drum, thats the issue with the left side, it continues to auto adjust out when it shouldnt!!

Glad you solved it, something to remember, is the brake fluid topped (or above the - line, (depends on wear of pads but never below -)

The brake light is controlled by two switches.

There is a switch under the parking brake handle in the cab. Check that. And if the fluid is low in the master cylinder, the brake light will come on.

Diesel 6# series have 3 ways to activate the brake light.

Parking brake handle
Fluid level brake fluid
Vacuum switch on vacuum canister .

You might have a vacuum leak or worn vacuum pump vanes.

Check the auto ajusters:THEY ARE DIFFERENT
Left hand thread goes on the left side wheel
Right hand thread (like a normal bolt and nut)goes on the right side wheel.

The kit I bought made it even easier, has left and right stamped into them haha. When I took this side apart it had an extra washer under the E clip, Im guessing this is in line with what you guys have said about the C clip and the E clip not holding the adjust in place correctly hence having room to wiggle around.

Thanks for the heads up on the brake light, I had lost fluid due to a leak in the front. All fixed up and topped up, if the leak continues ill have to replace the hard line for the front. Thanks again!!
