Stopped for lunch, thought I'd show off my work so far...

Glued, screwed, angle-aluminumed, bolted, and routered. Tomorrow will be flapped (to cover rear seats for sleeping) and bed-liner'd.

As for wheeling... too busy working on the truck and working on my house. But yes, I should get out there. Want to avoid too much pin-striping on this truck tho......... wheeling in Mexico this winter = no scratchy trees + awesome surf spots :)

Finished the cabinet part. Drawers will come later -- must get back to some real work. In the mean time I can just jam gear into the compartments. At least we can sleep comfortably in the truck now :) For a long trip, the rear seats would be removed and Rubbermaids put in their place.

very nice.

I like the sleeping inside the truck style of camping...my 70 needs a little stretching tho...

Cool trick we used las summer when we went on a road trip was to get a bunch of bug screen and those little magnets...instant window screens...( probably obvious, but still, worked great...)

The top is 5/8 everything else is 1/2. It's Baltic Birch...

We used it for the first time this past weekend and it was fantastic. No rattles while driving, super solid while sleeping. Parked, moved a couple Rubbermaids from the back seat to the front seats, flipped the back seats down, flipped the flap over (with our bedding already in place) and crawled into bed. Parked-to-sleeping in 60 seconds or less :)

That is very nice build. I will have to look into it the birch. I need to figure out how to build it so I can have a cargo barrier for the dogs in the back but be able to lay it flat for a full length bed. Maybe if I built the flap with 1" square tube and stucco wire. Then I would just need to build a brace that would hold it at 90 degrees.

Are you going to put drawers in their or just use plastic tubs?

The birch was from Windsor Plywood. Not much more expensive than G1S, although the sheets are smaller (5x5). I think I counted 13 plys on the 5/8 and 11 plys on the 1/2. Over double the number of plys than normal plywood. Hopefully I'll get around to building drawers this winter -- for now I'm just jamming stuff in there :)

John, you could tie your dog barrier flap to your rear headrests to keep it from falling backwards. And it can't go forwards with the rear seats up........

You can sleep under my barrier if your not too big.

Sorry, hijack off.

on that plywood.....if you can, the lower ply count stuff is a bit better, in the stuff we get in the shop from PJ white distributors the higher ply count is the import stuff (made in china and the vineer is paper thin and thickness of the sheet is all over the place) and can have a tendency to start to delaminat after a little while...the domestic stuff costs a bit more but we have never seen any problems with it.....we have been using both for a year or 2 now building kitchens ect..

Thought I'd show off my storage unit in...... action, sort of. Not exactly its intended use. Four people, one IKEA kitchen, and lots of other random goodies.

Nice! Wow looks like the 80 is handling the weight very well, my truck would be sagging a lot more than that and causing traffic congestion shortly thereafter. :)

I still plan on comming by your place..... just have to find the time.

Cheers
Cam

I think I might build a new storage unit, more for storage and less for sleeping now that we have a roof tent. Any 80 owners want to buy my old one? There's over $200 worth of baltic birch plywood in it and a lot of love :) It fits the 80 trunk like a glove and bolts to the tie-down points on the floor. It is as shown in the photos above, except I cut the flap in half to have the option of only folding down one seat at a time. All the edges are routered to a nice smooth curve so no sharp corners.

We'll find out I guess! Mine is underway......

Very cool system. I was looking forward to building my own but your's is so close to what I was planning that I'm tempted to save myself the time and take it off your hands... If its still for sale. What are the clear interior dimensions of the storage compartments? Are you ever on this side of the pond with it? or Nanaimo?

Yes, it is still for sale. Each cubby is 41" deep, 21" wide, and 10.75" tall. My intention was to add a drawer fridge to one cubby and build a drawer for the other.

I'm not on the mainland very often but I could easily meet up in Nanaimo....
